The information, compiled by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., shows that banks in 33 other states are less dependent upon interest and dividends from securities than
findiana banks. For every $100 of deposits, Indiana banks obtained $1.04 from investments in 1939. This was the lowest in five years. In 1938 Indiana banks received $1.28 for "every $100 of deposits, $141 in 1937, $134 in 1936 and $1.31 in 1935. The figures also reveal that Indiana banks lose heavily on these security holdings. Banks in 33 other states lose less : than. Hoosier Roger Budrow banks. During 11930 Indiana banks lost 40 cents for every $100 of deposits. ' Only once in the last five years was this figure higher and that was in 1938 when the write-off was 53 cents for every $100 of deposit. Back in 1937, 1936 and 1935 the osses were smaller — 36 cents, 25 nts and 39 cents, respectively,

speed shell forging machine which Sam's rearmament. |
Czechoslovakia, has| been trying to perfect - a machine which would
make shell forging: in two .opera-
tions instead of ‘five or six. They had finally succeecied in 1938: and had one machine in actual operation when news care of ‘Germarny’s intention to take over the couniry. The engineers wiecked the ‘new machine beyond all hope of resurrection and smuggled the drawings and blueprints out of the couniry. They made their wey to Great Britain where their invention was eagerly . purchased. The Baldwin Southwark Co. cf - Philadelghia bought the Amrericen patent rights.
Insides Fi hished
First machine manufactured was installed in McKee: Rocks plan; of the Pressed Steel Car Co. of Piftsburgh, which had ¢ large order for shell forgings frorn the War Department.
The big advantages of the machine are the saving of time and’
5 | the quantity of shell forgings it pro-
duces. It is geared {to produce shells
of any size from 75 to 105 milli-
meters. and can be adapted to production of even larger shells. At present it is turning out about 150 shell forgings an hour. The shell forgings are completely finished inside. With other machines further boring anc Cleaning of the forgings is necessary.
Heated to 2300 Degrees
In the process of manufaciure, steel bars 21 feet long and 3 [1-32 inches square are cut into 73%-inch lengths by an autimatic acetylene cutting machine. These pieces are then fed into a rotary type gas-fired furnace which heats 180 of these 50 billets per hour do 2300 degrees. After an hour ths billets are fed into the forging machine, in which a shell die pierce: the billet and pushes it into the shape of a round-
0 bottomed cup 8 inches long and 4%
inches in .diamete:. The machine ther. forces this cup into another part of the mechenism where it is drawn and squeezed into the ploper length and width, ~ When it’ comes out from the machine the forging is passed on to a workman who stainps on its order and heat number, | It is ther placed in & sand pit to cool-off. All this takes but a few seconds.

A QUIET RALLY
Traders Reason That After 5-Day Slump, It’s Time | For an Upturn.
NEW YORK, Jan. 18 (U. P.).— Stocks extended yesterday's late rally in quiet trading today. Bonds were firm. Commodities generally were narrow movers, featured by. new highs in Santos coffee. Rallying tendencies in stocks were ascribed to technical factors. Trad= ers reasoned that the five-day de- = cline earlier in the week justified, some recovery. There was no change = in attitude on the market generally. and traders continued cautious. Railroad issues, features yester= day, were mixed. Steels were higher, led by Bethlehem. Next week’s. steel operations are expected to hold near : present high levels. Copper shares held steady just under the 8 previous close.
