The Question Box | |
Q—When cooking over an open fire, how can the utensils be treated so that they can be cleaned easily?
A—The outside of pots, pans, and kettles should first be soaped with yellow laundry soap which will come off easily with the Sook even in hard water,
Q—How may I remcyve soft drink stains from clo ‘hing and table linen?
A—Fresh stains may often be removed by applying a solution of equal parts of _glycerin and alcohol by the “pad method.” This pad, or sponging, method is effective on stains that dissolve readily, and . on grease stains. At the start, brush off surface dust and dirt. Then place a heavy absorbent cloth or clean blotter benegth the stain, with the right side of the stain down. Before beginning to sponge, mois- ~ ‘ten the sponging cloth lightly with the cleaning solvent land cover it with one or two layers of dry cloth. Light strokes are esserjtial in spong- ~ ing; rubbing does riot help. In sponging the spot, work from the outside toward the center of the spot, tapering in every direction to help prevent. a ring. |As the cleaning fluid is applied, blow lightly on the spot to aid quick drying and also to prevent a ring. The absorbent. pad and the cleaning cloth should be changed frequently and kept clean. Do not| roughen the fabric by too vigorous treatment.

By JANE STAFFORD WHAT, EXACTLY, is a spoiled child? | You have your own ides, ‘of course, but a good many people have somewhat mistaken notions on the subject of spoiling children. Judging irom their actions, many parents think that a spoiled child is ‘one wile receives too much affection or 00 much attention froin parents. Young parents often deny then - selves ‘and their children the fun of petting and cuddling them for fear of spolling the children. Docfors who make a study of children say that this is a mistake. The child neecis affection. The trouble, and the spoiling, bégin when the child gets attention and affeciion by way of -appeasement. | This point is stressed in a report by gs group of Oakland, Cal, child specialists, Dr. Clifford’ Sweat, Dr. Lawrence R. Jacobus and Dr. Henry E. Stafford, in a report .to the American Medical a spoil d
They define the term, a spo child,” as follows: “A spoiled individual of any age is one who too frequently or too exclusively uses disagreeable methods to get whatever it is he may
want.” | ”» ”» ” A CHILD should be taught fiidependenge and he should at un early age learn to fend for himself. This does riot mean that he should be treated mechanically, or dg2prived of love and attention. “However,” say the California doctors, “both attention and affection musticome to him: spontaneovsly out of his parent's love and wisdom rather than be thrown to him as an appeasemen{ lest he make himself too’ disagrecable for. toleration. Patents must allot some time each day for playing with the child,
teaching him and telling him storizs.:
But if the time ordinarily alloted to thé chld’s pleasure must be curtailed or changed, ‘his lack of understanding or his displeasure must not becorie the scolirge which drives his unwilling pargits to give him grudgingly the attention which he demands and needs with disagrceable methods coming -to have {bo great a value in his mind.”

DEAR JANE JORDAN—TI am a girl 16 years old and a senior in 50¢ SIZE
high school. I have been going steady with a boy for the ‘past several months, Yesterday he told me thst some boys had told him some things about me and two other boys I used to know. One of the boys I know only slightly and the other I had only one date with a long time ago. who told the story, I can’t understand what would make them say this when it isn’t true or what would make anybody believe it. I know that . my boy friend would never have believed thic except that he heard the sanre story from several other sources. I have told him it is not true and I am sure he believes me but naturally he wonders why so many boys would say this. I don’t know how many people have heard the story, but I must stop it if I can. Will you please advise me what to do? A. B. C. 3 a» 'n : Answer—It lias heen said that gossip is the social reward of personality. That is, nobody talks about a girl unless she is interesting. Any attractive girl who decides to go steaiy with one boy must expect some unkind digs from the opposition. It-is the old sour grapes technique. “I didn’t want her anyhow. She is sour.” Evidently it wounded the egos of the boys who started this story about you. To. be [sure you had only one date with one of the gossipers and kiew the other but slightly. Although you may have done nothing definifely to hurt, your lack of interest in them has registered and they can’t take it. Thereiore they malign you reputation. They had to be attracted to you first before they would take the trouble to lie about you. Whoever bothered to start s story about a non-entity? * : . As for the irierids who kept the gossip alive by repeating it tc your boy friend, 3 they ts they, too, are motivated by some form of jealousy. Perhaps they used to enjoy the cdfip: anionship of your boy friend before he went steady and now thal he’s always with you "they resent, it. per Ps they do not go steady themselves but woulc. like to. In that they might be envious enough to want to break = other Stents couples, thereby making themselves feel les: neglected.
