~ Banks Here Have More Idle Cash

Than Ever, Annual Reports Show By ROGER BUDROW

ELEVEN OF THE MAJOR INDIANAPOLIS BANKS had nearly 150 million dollars of cash on hand at the end of 1940. “Wouldn't I like to get my hands on some of that!” is the average person’s first reaction. The banks’ answer to-that is, “Well, we with| ‘you would!” Because that cash isn’t doing the banks any good, they can’t make any profit from idle doNars loafing

Many ‘Temporary Buildings May Furnish Parking Lots Later.

By JOHN W. LOVE Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Jan. 11--The new wave of expansion in the ma-chine-tool industry, perhaps the big\gest yet, is to include the construcof temporary ‘buildings, their floors designed to ‘be converted later on into parking

\ Part of the sacrifice workmen may have to make in the national emergency is to see existing parking lots built over. The inflation of the industry will also include the recruitnig of blants now in other lines of business, but capable of doing precision work, such as printing-press makers, at the probable cost of creating shortages of civilian equipment. Some of these shortages are now definite-

ly on the way, and though regretable, they can’t be avoided now. One! such scarcity is probably to be in garage equipment. Machine tool manufacturers, | called to Washington again this week, learned to their: astonishment | that the Government is looking to them for a production of more than $100,000,000 beyond what they supposed a couple of months ago. Instead of the $550,000,000 worth they were told in November was to be needed, the figure appears [to be above $650,000,000. f Expand! Expand! How much it will exceed that amount the manufacturers cannot find out, nor can they be sure what particular types of machine will be needed. All they know now is that they are asked to build and build, and expand and expand. Nobody in Washingtan is able to tell them what tools will be required in the greatest quantities— and therefore which manufacturers will be expected to build the most new factories—because the British are ¢céming in with vast and globular figures on their prospective purchases. Bach attempt to work gut the American, and British needs in terms of the work to be e¢xpected from the separate types of tools has been obsolete .before the figuring could be finished.

After the War? Demands for munitions are growing faster than even ‘the machinetool manufacturers now working in! the Government offices ate able fo] break them down and write them out in numbers of lathes, milling

machines, boring mills, grinders, etc, to be required. Even if they knew they might not publish them, for fear the Germans would oyerhear. Most painful of all the discoveries the machine-tool incustry is{?® making is that last year, {his year and next year it is expected to turn out enough tools to last American industry for a decade of normal
