By EMMA RIVERS MILNER THE ERECTION OF A NEW Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Irvington will mark the climax of a three-part story. In the spring, ground is to be
broken for the new Tudor-Gothic church, the Rev. Fr. James Mopre,
= pastor, announced today. Buill of
sandstone trimmed with limestone, it will stand un the high wooded lo} in the 5300 block on E. Washington St. The old frame rectory between the school and the new rectory will be torn down. The opening chapter of the siory

of this prospective new church was written when a. modest chapel was
built in 1979 in the same location, on land formerly belonging to the Cusack "amily. The second par} of the story devoloped with the construction of the present combined
school and church six years later.
Now, the congregation is to see, its long cherished hope come to [full realization in the third installment. The new Our Lady of Lourdes Church will be characterized! by simplicity in every detail both in/design and furnishings. It -is- to be built close to the earth in the manner of the English parish church rather than in the more spleridid cathedral style.’ Surmounted by a constrastingly tall steeple and se; in the midst of old forest trees, it gives an impression of great slenderness and grace in the architect's draw-

whic is placed at some distance from the front of the lot and is-also built of sandstone with litnestone decoration. While many Catholic ghurches have two side altars, there is to be but. one here. It will stand in a small chapel to the west of the main altar and in it, instead of the more usual statuary, will be an oil paintirlg recalling the original Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at Lourdes, France. Stations of the Cross also
promised. | And over all will
painted iol and a new organ are be a beamed ceiling completing the general atmosphere of simplicity. Father Moore says the school has grown so hat it is over-flowing its quarters in spite of the fact that Berhadett¢ Hall was added oy the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael W. Lyons, pastor emieritus, some yeais ago. For this reason, both the school children and their teachers, the Sis-
dy of Lourdes Church
the upper floor of the school, now used as the church, is turned over
* to them for class rooms.
When the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated by the Men's Club with the annual banquet, Feb. 11, it is expected that the new
church will furnish the most excit-
ing topic of conversation since the group was organized 20 years ago by Msgr. Lyons. Eager with anticipation also are the Mothers’ Club which looks; after school equipment, lunches and recreation; the Boy Scout Troop, and the Calendar Club, a federation of all the women’s parish work. Bernadette Hall is named for the littie French school girl recorded in church history as having seen the apparition of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Lourdes. The girl's name was Marie Bernard Soubiraus but she is popularly called “Bernadette.” A great church, the Basilica” of the Rosary, has been erected at the Grotto which is visited by about 600,000 people each year. It is a m2mory of the Indianapois congregation that Msgr. Lyons was given the honor of carrying the Blessed Sacrament in the procession on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes while visiting in Lourdes, France. Among the family names inseribed in early Baptismal records of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, here, are many that are still on the. parish roll. Included are Kernel, Kiefer, Cullen, Treacy, Duffy, Meyers, Spotts and Mcgaughey, The Rev. Fr. Louis T. Gootee is assistant pastor.
