Model .d¢signers sometimes resort to quer methods to optain top performance with their planes. . The nafionally-known Cahill brothers of Indianapolis aje two of the most finusual designejs. They stop at nothing in “new +fangled”
ideas for models. Jim Cahill won the Wakefield Trophy in 1938 with ong of the first single: ‘bladed folding jjropellers. | His older brother, Robert, hung up a world’s record of better ti nan halfthe same year; with a small Clas: C fuselage model, which had more wing on one side of the fuselage than on the othpr.
Piastern for Buildes
That sine Class C mojlel, redesigned bv Scripps-Howaid Junior Aviator eiigineers to conform to the latest A. M. A. weight rulis, is presented hire for model | pilots to build. The engineers retained {he “cockeyed wing” idea as the plans show. One panel is 20 inches |n length, the other 18% inches. The purpose is ttl make the model circle in the glide and to keep it from spiraldiving die to excessive torque on the take: off. Anothér unusual feature of the model is the high ajpect-ratio stabilizer. Its overall span is 22 inches although the chord is only 2% inches. Make | full-size drawirlgs of all parts and carry out consfruction as given on the drawing. The fuselage is squar:, therefore the f lop view is the sam: as the side. i
|Easy to Transpert
Due fp the large stailizer the tail surfaces are glued 'o the tail boom which is fastened tp the fuselage by means of small wire hooks and rubber bands. It fan be removed (easily for insforting the model. The {anding gear alsq is detachable, being fitted into hort strips of spaghetti tubing well cemented into the fuselage. Be cireful when carvi| he the propeller. | It is importani that the block from which it i§ carved be the exict dimensions as shown. It should be sawed to the [form shown before | carving is begur.
Stofer Wins Own Trophy
It wasn’t planned that way, but Harold Stofer won [he Harold Stofef| Trophy at the Indiana Gas Mode! Association’s Nev Year’s:Day meet at. Builders Are Given Help i in
Unusual Design
which was unusually godd for this time of year. If you remember, Jan. 1 was a cold. cloudy, dreary, rainy day. A heavy fog bank about one-half mile away at the southwest corner of the field hampered the pilots since the ships flew in that direction. The times would have been even better had the day been clear, since the ships disappeared into the fog. Timing stops When the planes go out of sight.
Mr. Stofer got a longest single flight of 4:25.2 out of his own designed Class C job piloted with an Ohlsson 60. Bud Bowman's Comet sailplane had a total time of 6:51, with a longest single flight of 2:35. He
kit presented by Ray Neese of Block's model airplane department. Bill Randler was third with his original design ship which flew for 6:37, James Bennett Jr.s time of 5:44 beat out his dad by 1:21. Other winners were William Keough, Mr. Neese and George Cochran. Each of the ships flown by the Messrs. Bowman, Kandler and Bennets were powered with ‘Ohlsson 60s.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (U. PJ). —The State Department has published correspondence showing that it reluctantly head rejected French pleas that the United States intercede to find a haven in the Western Hemisphere for thousands: of refu-
France to escape the Nazi conquest: The U. 8S. explained to France
ta bring pressure on sister republics to change their immigration laws and that quotas under the U. S. law were filled. In addition, the note said, many refugees were unable to take advantage of visas for this . country because the French state had not approved their exit permits. The French note said that forced
migration to unoccupied France of thousands of German refugees and Jews has aggravated food and shelter problems. The American reply emphasized appreciation of the “serious predicament” of the French Government and this country’s readiness to help “to the full extent of the existing laws and practices.” It noted, however, that the Government has adopted the principles that there should be no distinction between refugees on grounds of race, nationality or religion and that no country should be asked to receive more immigrants than is permitted by existing laws. The American Government also, it added, has “made it clear it could not support or be a party to any measures which would encourage the spread to the Western Hemisphere of f migration in which people great numbers are intended 0 driven anarchically upon Prey states with un= happy consequencss.
