¢ “Gallup Polls Reveal That War Spirit Is Highest in South, Where More People Are Willing to Aid England Despite Risk Involved. By DR. GEORGE GALLUP
Director, American Institiite of Public Opinion i PRINCETON, N. J., Jan. 10.-—Study of opinion in the various sections of the United States reveals interesting geographical differences in public sentiment, on war, zid to England, national defense and allied subjects. Although Institute surveys have consistently found a
war, the sharpest differences are between the South, on the
‘one extreme, and the Middle
West on the other. The war spirit in the country today. is highest in the South, lowest in the Middle West. The South is the most willing to aid England
and to take the] - gamble of a pos-|
sible war resulting from such aid; the Middle West is the , least willing. No section is strictly isolation=ist, however.
Even the Mid-| dle West is less] . isolationist in its!
thinking than many political observers
Dr. Gallup
pleted a majority (55 per cent) of voters in that area are willing to aid England even at the risk of war. But comparisons between the Middle West and the South show
that twice as many Mid-Western-| _
ers as Southerners have isolationist leanings. The geographical capital of isolationism is the Chicago area. On the question of aid to England af the risk of war, for example, the views of people in Chicago exactly mirror the sentiment of the East Central and ‘West Central sections —the areas comprising the Middle West. ; Currently 45 persons. in every 100
out of the war than to aid England at the risk of war. Chicago votes exactly the same way. By contrast, data from the South shows that only about half as many Southern voters think it is more important to keep out. A difference in attitudes is also revealed on the question whether the future safety of the United States depends on a British victory. In the Middle West nearly onethird (30 per cent) say our safely does not depend on England winning. In the South, the proportion
cent). : Moreover, sentiment for getting into the’ war is more prevalent jin tha South than in any other section. Nearly one-fifth (17 per cent) of voters there want to see the United States go to war against Germany now, as compared to 10 per cent in the Middle West and 12 per cent ior the country as a whole, . In the following tables note how the South and the Middle West represent two extremes: : “Which of these two things do you think it is more important for the United States to try to do--to keep out of the war- ourselves, or to help England win, even at the risk of getting into the war?” r Help England
