“Books Bring Life and Warmth

To the Furnishings.of a Room

BOOKS bring the furnishings of i room a sense of warmth and

life.

They are helpful too as the focal interest of a room when th¢ room

has no architectural focal point like a bay window or fireplace.

Jersey and

Decorators think so much of books and book shelves that they even use “fake” books bought by the pound-zt the second-hand stores rather

than complete a room without them. Fortunate are those families whose |

homes already have the bookshelves |

built in. For those to whom bookshelves are an “after thought? there is the suggestion that small tiers of shelves be set into odd wall spaces or a single ‘shelf placed along a long wall space. If the shelves are to be shifted from time to time, unit shelves may be bought in the furniture departments of the stores. These often make the most of the odd awkward wall spaces. One attractive home has the inpides of the shelves painted a-con-trasting color to the outsides— effectively too. The family does not have enough in their small collection to fill all the shelves so have ornaments arranged charmingly among the books. Another home has indirect lighting in the shelves to make the books easier to find. Decorators are quick to warn, however, that a glowing medley of books can “kill” a pale delicate color scheme or a daintily ‘decorated room. If you do have a pale color gcheme, you might try making book covers out of chintz, wallpaper, gilver or gold oil cloth or handblocked prints. This not only keeps | the background and books in tune!. but protects them as well.

The Question Box

Q—What is rice flour used for? A—It may be used for making cakes, but cannot be made. into leavened bread.

Q—What sweat? A—Condensation of moisture from the air upon relatively cold surface of the window panes. It develops by the same process that causes beads of moisture to form on the outside surface of a pitcher of ice water on a warm day. A circular containing suggestions for remedying the condition can be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelop to The Indianapolis Times Service Bureau, 1013 Thirteenth St,, Washington, D. C.

causes

Q—What are peppercorns and for what purpose are they used? A—They are berries from the black pepper plant, and are used for seasoning.

Q—Please give me a recipe for popovers.’ A—Mix one egg, well beaten, 1 cup sweet milk, 1 cup flour and a little salt; bake in heated and buttered gem pans slowly until the batter becomes all crust and pops over.

Q—How can blood stains be removed from the seat of an automobile? A—Remove. as much of the stain as possible by rubbing with a clean cloth wet with cold water. Care must be taken to use only clean portions of cloth when rubbing the stain. If this treatment does not remove all of the stain, apply a little household ammonia water to it, with a «cloth or brush. After about one : A ae continue to rub the stains with a clean wet cloth. Nothing further can be done to remove the stain if this treatment is not effective. Hot water and soap must never be used on blood stains, because that would set the stain and make its removal practically impossible.

Q—What wines should be soreed with fish? : A—White, light, dry wines, as Sauterne or Riesling.

Q—How should a trench coat be cleaned? A—Use a mild solution of soap and water, Scrub the. garment lightly; then rinse with clear water, Be sure that no water remains in the pockets.

Quick Tartar Sauce

A QUICK tartar, sauce can be made by adding a quarter cup pickle relish and a quarter cup catsup to one cup mayonnaise.

_ Orderliness Encouraged

PROVIDING sufficient space for a child to keep his toys is one way to. encourage orderliness. If you prefer a chest, one placed under a window will do double duty as window seat. Flank the chest with
