SECRET RADIO

French: Unable to Locate Martinique. Station; U. S. Jammed Off.

By PETER C..RHODES United Press Stair’ Correspondent NEW YORK, Jan. 10.—French residents in Martinique ‘informed me that a secret German radio station is believed to have been oper» ating regularly’ in Martinique since September, 1939, when the war began. While I was in Martinique French warships in the harbor tried to triangulate and spot ‘the: supposed broadcaster with their wireless sets, but failed. Repeated searches for the secret stalfon for more than 16 months have failed, it was said, ecause the French have never had suitable mobile “spotter” units to track down over jungle, mountain

mile island the person or persons operating the station.

Has 500-Mile Radius

Persons who had tried to locate the station described it as a low powered short-wave set with a maximum of 500 miles. Berlin, it wes noted, has been

in the world concerning events in Martinique since the war began. My informants were of the opinion that code messages were being picked up and relayed by some more powerful station located some-'

who deserted his wife and five chil-|

of the South American mainland. American officials in San Juan

tection station there said’they had heard “four or five” similar small stations operating in the Caribbean area. . News Jammed Off * They also claimed that important American = broadcasts, including some news broadcasts: have been Jammed off the air throughout the

and cane fields of ‘this 385 square |:

operating a new powerful radio de-|-

Caribbean, They said this was ac-

camplished by two powerful stations in Germany simultaneously calling in on the U. 8. wave-length. There are no official German armistice commission officials in Martinique, as there are at Algiers, Oran and Dakar. they never agreed to such a commission in their armistice terms and the United States attitude was believed to have prevented the Germans from making such a demand. Whatever observers the Germans have on the island operate under cover. The French, I was told, were watching suspects as much now as during the war.

Dickerson said the books will be on display so that the public may have a chance to see them before they are placed in difterent sections of the library and its branches. ; The books will not be circulated until after the exhibition, but reservations may be made at the main desk in the Central Library at any time.
