9 PLANE PLANTS

ARE AUTHORIZED!

‘Heavy Bombers Are to Be Assembled at Tulsa, Ft. Worth.

~~ WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (U. P.)-— - Assembly plants for heavy bombers ‘will be considered at Tulsa, Okls., and Ft. Worth, Tex. The War Department said yesterday that the plants, which will assemble parts made by the automotive industry, were decided on after a lengthy conference among defense officials and aviation leaders. ‘The War Department's statement said that the Tulsa plant will be operated under a management contract by the Douglas Aircraft Corp., of Santa Monica, Cal. It originally had been scheduled to be operated by the Consolidated Aircraft Corp, San Diego, Cal. The Ft. Worth plant will be operated by Consolidated. Both plants will be constructed by Army engineers. They probably will cost $9,000,000 each.

Location of the plants rounds out|

the Army’s program to have four assembly factories to turn out 3600 bombers annually. Two medium bomber plants are to be located at Omaha, Neb., and Kansas City, Kas. The Army expects to ask Congress, shortly for $1,000,000,000 to defray costs of production of the first 3600 planes. The medium plants, when in full operation within 18 months, will turn out about 100 planes ‘monthly each. The heavy plants will produce 50 monthly each.

PERMANENT DRAFT PLAN WINS SUPPORT

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (U. P.)--The American Legion’s proposal for a permanent draft program for youths of 18 to 21 today gained Congressional support and promises ‘of immediate consideration by the House and Senate Military Affairs Committees. : : Chairmen Andrew J. May and Morris Sheppard of the House and Senate Committees, respectively, said they would submit the Legion's plan to members of their groups at the earlest possible moment. The Legion’s legislative commitfee here has asked Mr. Sheppard and Mr. May to introduce the necessary legislation stimultaneously in both Houses. The Selective Service Act, as now drafted, remairis cperative for-only five years. Men of 21 through 35 are subject to military training under the law. National Draft Director Clarence A. Dykstra recently discussed with President Roosevelt a plan for a permanent plan to train men as they reach the age of 21. But no conclusions, if any were reached, have been disclosed.

'Yellow Hornet’

Stung by FBI

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 4 (U. P.) — James Porter, 18, a meek and sickly youth who friends thought' had no “backbone,” faced are raignment today on an extortion charge for sending a letter to Betty Grable, movie star, in which he demanded $2000 and signed himself “The Yellow * Hornet.” Federal Bureau of Investigation - agents said he apparently hac ‘been grinding out similar letters, mostly to persons in the neighborhood of his home at Washing ton, Pa., for the past six months. They said he had admitted writing 16 “Yellow Hornet” letters since July 30. . Apparently he never collected anything.

FORD OFFERS JOBS AS ANSWER TO UNION

DETROIT, Jan. 4 (U. P.) —Harry Bennett, personnel director of the Ford Motor Co., said after a conferehce with Federal Labor Concilator James Dewey yesterday that the company would rehire any man ‘shown to have been discriminated against in the recent dismissal of ‘approximately 250 workers. The United Automobile Workers Union (C. I. 0.) has charged that the employces were fired for union ‘activity. The company has said that the dismissals were attributable to seasonal layoffs.
