NEW ALUMINUM PLANTS TO AID PLANE OUTPUT
Aircraft Makers Reveal Reason for Expected Delays.
By CHARLES T. LUCEY Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Jan. 4—A recent survey of aircraft factories has shed light on the delays forecast by Ecward R. Stettinius Jr. of the National Defense Advisory Commission, it was learned today. Mr. Stettinius called the delays temporary and said they would be offset by new aluminum fabricating facilties now being built. The survey was made by repre-
sentatives of Treasury Secretary
Morgenthau, who has directed sev« eral similar studies aimed at speed- . ing defense production, and of the War and Navy Departments and other agencies. Suggestions. for expediting production until the new factories go into production include: 1. Reduce production of aluminum for non-defense purposes. 2. Procure from each plane builder a complete itemized list of aluminum deliveries required monthly for the next year. 3. On the basis of this information, arrange for priorities to assure necessary deliveries. 4, If necessary, place all aluminum production on a 24-hour, sev-en-day basis.
Capacity Increased
Construction now under way will provide new aluminum fabricating facilities sufficiently in advance of expanding aircraft production to meet all military requirements, according to Mr. Stettinius. The expansion will increase capacity in the various branches of the aluminum industry from two to five times that of last September, according to estimates. One aircraft plant reporting in the joint departmental survey showed the following delivery periods on certain fabricated items: Aluminum castings, 10 to 20 weeks; wires and bars, 18 weeks; forgings, 20 weeks; sheet aluminum, 20 to 28 weeks, and tubing, 28 weeks,
West Coast Plant Sought
West Coast airplane marnufacturers have urged the Government to do everything possible to arrange new aluminum production facilities in that region. One manufacturer told Government representatives that the rnost serious problem in meeting delivery . schedules on a type of boinber or- - dered in large numbers lay in procurement of materials, particularly aluminum, Another aircraft concern reported that it had been several hundred thousand pounds behind cn fabricated aluminum, chiefly sheets, needed for production. Still another West Coast manufacturer reported that although delivery promises on aluminiim parts were not satisfactory, a reserve on hand would permit a sizable bornber program to proceed. Other firms
said they were able to avert pro-|
duction difficulties through heavy aluminum orders placed months
Shipments Exceed Needs
~~ Mr, Stettinius has said ‘that several reports of shortages apparently arose from fear about future deliveries. But since September, he said, total shipments of aluminum materials to aircraft plants have exceeded the amount necessary for current military-plane delivery schedules. ‘Aluminum alloy sheet mill capac= ity, now about 8,000,000 pounds a month, is scheduled to increase to 12,500,000 pounds a month by March, 15,000,000 pounds a month in August and 22,500,000 pounds by June, 1942,

RETAIL TRADE HOLDS UP WELL
Dun & Bradstreet Reports Good Interest in January Sales.
NEW YORK, Jan. 4 (U. P)— Retail consumer buying showed a “less than expected ¢lecline” this week following the liggest Christe mas season in 11 years, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., repolted today. The post-Christmas letdown in retail trade was “legs pronounced than usual, as confilumer interest shifted rapidly from holiday goods to January sales events and clearances,” the trade guttiority said. Retail trade for the country as a whole in the current period was estimated 8 to 11 per cent over the corresponding 1939 week, compared with a year-to-year gain of 8 to 16 per cent in the previous week. “Retailers reported exchange and returns about normel” Dun & Bradstreet said. “It was noted that shoppers making exchanges often requested a higher-priced article Less Price Resistance
' “Interest in clearances and spe-cial-price goods | wis pronounced, but at the same time there was said to be noticeably less price resistance than usual. “Although down in| volume compared with past weeks, large articles in home furnishing lines, such as pianos, refrigerators, radios, -and floor coverings, continued to show good .sales increases over a year ago.” ‘Wholesalers Busy Retailers’ efforts to plug up inventory holes livened the light wholesale trading which usually goes with this period of the year, the suthority said in comment ing on: that division of trade. “Although scattered and rather small individually, oiders for sort ing-up purposes and clearance sales kept wholesalers faisly busy. Most houses were shipping a larger volume of replacement goods than at this time last year, ' Another— a generally unexpected--source of business was advance purchasin lines for which market an are scheduled in coming weeks.” Retail trade for the current week showed the following percentage gains over a year ago by regions: South 10 to 18; |New. England 3 to 7; East 6 to 12; Middle West 8 to
