BRITAIN KEY TO SAFETY OF U.S. 2 OUT OF 3 SAY
Substantial Minority, Centered in Midwest, Disagree In Survey.
By DR. GEORGE GALLUP ‘ American Institute of Public Opinion Copvright, 1940 . PRINCETON, N. J, Jan. 3—A substantial majority of American ‘voters heartily agree with President Roosevelt that the defense of America is closely linked with the defense of Britain, and believe that
the future security of the nation de-| -
pends on England winning the war. That fact is il revealed in a cross = section study of public opinion just completed by
the American
Institute of
Public Opinion.
The survey is an exhaustive analysis covering more . than 20 ‘aspects of the ® defense ssh So far as pu c Dr. Gallup opinion is cone cerned. This report is the first of ".@ series on the subject. Today's vote indicates that nearly 7 of every 10 of the country’s 50 million voters—or approximately 35 million—reject the idea put forth in some quarters that the fate of the British is no concern of ours and that the United States can get along without any trouble even if the Nazis win.
Public Has Deep Concern
‘On the contrary, the evidence from the survey indicates a deep, public concern over the Battle of Britain and a belief that the fate of America, is closely related to the fate of the English. Institute interviewers who cone ducted the survey throughout the
eountry sounded the opinions of a||
cross-section of voters on the fol- + lowing question: “Do you think our country’s future safety depends on England winning this war?” ‘The results are: ye 000000000 00000000000000 68%

. Not all Americans take this viewpoint, however. A substantial number—26 per cent—do not agree that the future of the country depends on a British victory. A special ‘analysis shows that this sentiment is more pronounced in
the Middle West—a traditionally|
isolated section—than elsewhere, ‘No Defeatist Spirit
Among the majority who do beMYeve that the country’s safety de-
pends’ on Britain .the chief argu-|
ments are that Germany would be
free to come after the United States||
and to penetrate South America, if ‘the British fleet were removed, and ' that our economic system and trade leresis depend on a British vieOA 1" There is virtually no defeatist - Spirit underlying the American attitude. When the President said in his fireside chat, “I believe the

Hot Fight With McCarran Likely Over Judiciary Committee Helm.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (U.P) — A heated fight over the leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the session of the 77th Con-
gress was indicated today as the Senate prepared to change more than one-fifth of its committee chairmanships. Senators Pat McCarran (I). Nev.) and Frederick VanNuys (D. Ind.), who have indicated they will bid for the post, have been in the Senate and on the committee for exactly the same period. Both were active in the fight against | President Roosevelt’s Supreme Court Enlargement Bill. Democratic Leader Alben W. Barkley (D. Ky.) said the question will come before the Demberatic Steering Committee for discussion tomorrow or it may be settled by a vote of the Judiciary Committee ite
