HUNDREDS FROM U.S. TRAIN WITH BRITISH FORCES
Officjally, Theyre Canadians; Most in Scottish Units Formed in Ontario. SOMEWHERE IN' ENGLAND,
political beliefs or a thirst for adventure, between 200 and 300 United States citizens are training today in British army centers. Several hundred more are in Canada. It is difficult to say just how many of them there are since mili-
tary records do not cover that point —officially they are ‘“Canadians’— but most of the Americans are in two Scottish units that were recruited in Ontario and Quebec. Even officers are not certain about the nationality of some of their
On the whole, the Americans seem happy. Some are “soldiers of fortune” and a large percentage of them have had experience in the U. S. Army or Marine Corps. They come mostly from the northwest states, but some are from Kansas, Mississippi and Texas. Several Ex-Marines One of the veterans is LanceCorp. Jim Tracy, who hasn't had a fixed address for a good many years. Fourteen years in the U..S. Marines took him to China and South America as well as through five World War engagements. For a while, he helped manage a CCC camp. Several other ex-Marines are in the snipers. One is Ian Glover, a young Yowan, who followed up four years in the U. S. Marines with three years in the Coast Guard service. He left a bank desk in Brooklyn last April to join the Canadian forces. Another sniper is Jack Mogk of Brooklyn, who served six’ years in the U. S. Army. He was stationed for a time at Panama where he was a member of a crack rifle team. For a while, he belonged to the old “Fighting 69th’ * of the National Guard. ’ Pete Prince, born in Brookline, Mass., left a Boston civil engineering firm and tried to join up the day before Canada officially declared war. It was not until two days later, however, that he got in as a Canadian,
Sold on Kilts
Pete will tell you frankly that a big factor in his choice of units was
the kilts. Back in 1930, he saw a
Scottish regiment — with pipes, swirling kilts and fixed bayonets—|j on parade and vowed Y he ever joined, they would be his choice.
Corp. Tom MacDougall was born |. noon
in Pittsburgh of Scottish parents.
He served three years in the U. 8. Cavalry and later was a member of the Elizabeth, N. J., police force. He now drives a headquarters car for his unit. His wife waits for him in Pittsburgh. “I had a brother who was killed in the last war,” MacDougall said. “He joined the Canadian Army in 1914, I figured I would take up where he left off.” There age scores of other Americans here. Young John Perry and his brother, Ed, of Winchester, Mass, joined in the early days of the war. John formerly was a tree surgeon and Ed a shipper in a factory. Leaves Laboratory
Joe Fleming left a biology labogatory in Philadelphia. Another Philadelphian, George Clenny, was a soldier in the U. 8. Army. Al Grant of Boston and Speed Kenyon of Kansas are ex-Navy men. Archie Black left a job in a New York
hospital. One of the favorites of the Quebec unit is Dixie Harwood of Virginia, a hard-bitten soldier of fortune who has been in U. S. Army service as well as in unofficial action in Spain and China. Another member 1s drawling, 6-foot-3 Ford Adams Temple, Tex. The biggest complaint the Americans have is about the difficulty in getting United States sports news. “We were weeks late in hearing details of the World Series and the hockey games,” one said, “something ought to be done about that.” Many of the boys, who are of
Scottish descent, spend their leaves |
in Scotland and they say they get a grand welcome there. Quite a few of the Americans have won their corporal stripes, although it is understood that the bona-fide Canadians have a better chance of advancement. Some of the boys with flying experience have put in applications for the American squadron training with the RAF. Others believe there are enough to form an allAmerican infantry unit, but there is little likelihood of that at the present time. :
