David Ross, one of the busiest and most popular announcers on the air, marks his 12th anniversary as a microphone maestro. for Columbia next month. Mr. Ross currently is announcing the Golden Treasury of Song, the Edwin C. Hill broad--casts and Take It or Leave It, but also fills in on other Columbia pro-, grams. He came to Columbia the first week of January in that - memorable year 1929. At that % time Columbia had just become David Ross the world’s largest network with a total of 49 stations. He has been with Columbia ever since and has watched the chain grow to 123 stations. He doesn’t remember just what his first CBS program was but recalls that there was some sort of mechanical difficulty. “There were some little buttons to push, I think,” he says, “and the engineer had to come out and get things started for me.” Mr. Ross got into the radio business by accident. One rainy night he went to Station WGBS (now WINS) in New York with a friend to watch a broadcast. The announcer failed to arrive and Mr. Ross, who had a reputation as a poetry reader, was asked to fill in. He picked up a handy volume of Poe’s poetry and began reading. His voice was so suited to radio that he ‘ was hired on the spot. On several other occasions, because of lastminutes program cancellations, Mr. Ross was forced to fill in with his poetry readings and he began to acquire a reputation. Winner of many awards for his fine diction he has many other “firsts” to his credit. He was the first to introduce Will Rogers, Andre Kostelanetz, Howard Barlow and Rudy Vallee over the air. “I remember, too,” Mr. Ross says, “that I had to ask Vallee how to spell his name when I wrote it on my notes.” Although nowadays there are a8 =
