Scandals’ In New Version White's Show Now In
Theater-Restaurant
NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (U. P.).— + George White of “Scandals” fame has returned to Broadway in the same old blue suit and black tie but for the first time in his show * business career he served steaks with sex. The man whose “Scandals” mu- . sical revues have played to millions —the last edition still is touring the nation in abbreviated form— is settling down on 48th St. to operate a glitter grotto punningly called “The +Gay White Way.” He calls it a 2 theater-restaurant because it is pos‘sible for patrons to tang up the ’salad with a glimpse of Ann Pen“nington’s twinkling knees (they still twinkle) or sauce a chop with .a, view of three-score other lively t lovelies. + Mr. White has been running re“hearsals from 9 p. m. to 7 a. m. when we looked in on him. He Shad just discovered that his chorus girls were doing, of all things, the .Charleston to a boogie-woogie beat. hy He Started It Mr. White clapped his “hr=nds .sharply in reproof, but he understood how it was. None of these “girls ever had seen the Charleston and so could not understand its rhythm. He introduced it in one of “his early “Scandals,” just as in “vaudeville days he popularized the turkey trot and later brought to “fame a thing of beauty called the black bottom. It was the Charleston, though, “which so rocked the nation that one July night the Pickwick Club in ~Boston shivered and shook and finally collapsed, carrying to death many a gay person who had just dearned the indescribable feat of passing the hands rapidly from knee to knee so that one hand never ‘knew what the other was doing. Mostly Unknowns po Mr. White took over and showed the girls how the Charleston was | done. To do so he shed his jacket and stepped onto the stage in one of the $1 white shirts he buys | daily. With the shirts, which he throws away without laundering, he wears one of more than 200 black ties, bow and four-in-hand. A blue suit completes the costume by which he has been known to show business through 16 editions of the “Scandals” scattered over a period of 211, years. After showing them how, Mr. White sat down for a breather. The only recognizable name in his new show is Ann Pennington’s. The others of the 26 principals are largely unknown. Out of them, he thinks, will come some new stars,| comparable to such of his discov-

Preceding this, Mrs. Lhevinne is to lecture on “The Technical Approach to Impressionism,” in which she will contrast this school of musical thought with the earlier romantic and classic periods. Both Mr, .and Mrs. Lehvinne were awarded the famous Rubinstein Prize in Russia following their years of preparation for professional activity, Mrs. Lhevinne being the first woman ever to be so honored. Soon after their marriage, however, she abandoned her concert activities, feeling that one career in one family was enough. In recent years she de-
