4627 ALIENS IN CITY REGISTER, FEW ARE LATE

Penalties for Tardiness Not Yet Announced by U. S. Aids Here.

A small group of aliens who

missed the midnight deadline for registration, appeared at the Post Office today, apprehensive of penalties that might be imposed by the Federal Government. Four registered this morning and

Postmaster Adolph Seidensticker said facilities would be extended daily from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. “until further notice.” Mr. Seidensticker announced that ‘ 4627 had registered in Indianapolis . before the dealine, 145 of them yesterday. . The last alien presented himself just at midnight.

38,074 Listed in State

. A Justice Department tabulation in Washington showed than 38,074 aliens were registered in Indiana by Dec. 20 and that 2596 registered last week. Mr. Seidensticker added that e notation of cause would have to be written on each registration after the deadline and that he was not certain what action would be taken against the tardy. From Washington, however, Alien Registration Director Earl G. Harrison, who announced that about 5,000,000 non-citizens had met requirements of the registration act, promised ‘vigorous action” against laggards. :- .. Penalties Provided

The law provides a penalty of a $1000 fine and a six-month sentence. Those giving false information while registering may be deported. . B. Howard Caughran, U. S. Dis- + _frict Attorney here, said he had received no instruction for prosecution of violators. New York City led in the national _ registration with a total of 500,000. The New York State total was expected to reach one-fifth of the national total.

15 FROM TORPEDOED SHIP REAGH CANADA

AN EAST COAST CANADIAN PORT, Dec. 27 (U. P.) —Fifteen survivors of the British freighter Aracataca, torpedoed 700 miles west of Ireland, Nov. 20, were recovering today from the hardships of four days in an open lifeboat. The fate of 49 others in three lifeboats which left the fruit ship bound for England. soon after a German submarine torpedoed her, was unknown. The 15 survivors landed here yesterday after being 22 days aboard a “free” French ship. At least two were hospitalized upon their arrival, They had to abandon ship so uickly that one seaman was wearng only pajamas and another had only bedroom slippers during the four days in an open boat. Immediately after leaving the ship they passed close to the U-boat which rose to the surface. A German officer, speaking excellent English, asked the name of the vessel.

Makes Debut In White House

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (U. P.). —Miss Joan Morgenthau, 18-year-old daughter of the Secretary of the Treasury and Mrs. Henry Morgenthau Jr., today was the first Cabinet member’s daughter ever to make her social debut at the White Mouse. “ President and Mrs. played host and hostess last night to more than 500 guests who

attended aj

mammoth b a ll marking Miss Morgenthaws formal presentation = to society. T h e Miss Morgenthau party followed much the same

pattern as the fete given two years

ago when Miss Eleanor Roosevelt,

niece of the First Lady, made her bow at the executive mansion. Invitations were issued on the basis of three boys to every girl, a ratio which Mrs. Roosevelt believes to be proper for ‘young people” functions. Guests included Washington debutantes, sub-debs and post-debs and scores of out-of-towners. Miss Morgenthau received the guests with her mother and Mrs. Roosevelt in the spacious east room. The towering White House Christmas tree added a festive note. The President sat at one end of the spacious room to greet guests and watch the dancing. His moth~ er, Mrs. James Roosevelt, was not in the receiving line but held a little court of her own during most of the evening.

AIR SECRETARY MAY BE NAMED

Revival of Post to Centralize War Plane Expansion Is Proposed.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (U. P.). —Administration officials today are considering appointment of an assistant secretary of war for air to centralize the huge warplane expansion program. Authoritative sources said it had been discussed by national defense officials but that it ultimately is a matter for President Roosevelt and Congress to decide. The Army has not had an assistant secretary of war in charge of air activities since F. Trubee Davison held the job between 1926 and 1932. Authority for the post still remains on the statute books although Congress has not appropriated the $10,000 per Year salary in recent years. Robert A. Lovett, New York businessman and former World War flier, now a special assistant fo handle matters with the aviation program, may be offered the job of assistant secretary for air, if President Roosevelt decides to revive it.
