Use of Wheelchair, Doctor Says.

By J. B.. WIRGES ‘Times Special Writer LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Dec. 25.— Dr. F. Walter Carruthers, an ore thopedic surgeon, who has practiced in Little Rock, Ark. for 21 years, believes he has perfected a

{simple method for treatment of a

fractured pelvis which will revolutionize surgical practice. - The old i of treatment was to place the patient in a cast that ran from his armpits to the toes. He was confined to bed, practically

‘helpless, from four to six weeks.

Dr. Carruthers saw a surgeon use an ordinary turnbuckle in a different kind of fracture case. This gave him an idea. He places the legs of the patient in a cast and has a gadget whereby he obtains traction to draw the broken bones together, With the break thus reset, the turnbuckles are used to get the proper spread of the legs. ‘The buckles are imbedded in the casts. They hold the The whole operation takes about 20 minutes. The patient can then use a wheelchair and can even roll over in bed. Pelvic fracturés have been es-

cause, in many instances, it meant Caesarian operations in case of motherhood. Dr. Carruthers says with this system normal childbirth is usual. To date, he says, he has used turnbuckles in 43 cases, all successful. Dec. 20 Dr. Carruthers read a paper on his method before the New
