WE TAKE IT from what Coach Bud Surface of Seymour says that the South Central sweepstakes this year will end up in a three or four-way photo finish. ’ Franklin’s Grizzly Cubs may be the current Jront-runner and Columbus may be just a nose behind, but Mr. Surface refuses to count out either Shelbyville or Rushville. So we won't either. Power is so well balanced in the league that Mr. Surface honestly believes his flashy five of four years ago—the one that won 17 of 20 games—couldn’'t play better than .500 ball against this competition. One is given to believe by the Seymour tutor’s remarks—coaches don’t go for flat on-the-record statements—that Franklin may be a shade the better of the aforementioned quartet. Columbus is - the league’s quick quint, the fire wagon, the roller-bearing equipped machine. Franklin, on the other hand, mixes speed with deliberation, and the result is very annoying, to say the least. The Grizzly Cubs shook up a cocktail of these makings when they defeated Columbus, 34-28. His own Owls may do some pestering late in the season, Surface believes, if they ever get the range. When they lost to Jeffersonville early this month, they took 65 shots within the foul circle and made a measly six. Here's the latest South Central rundown:

JIM MITCHELL and Alan Nolan, two Shortridge footballers seasonally employed as Daily Echo columnists, are in an argument over the annual city basketball tournament. Mitchell defends the tourney as the only fair method of determining the champion, a valuable preliminary to the sectional, a crowd-pleaser and a method of building inter-school friendship. Nolan argues that it’s the “hot” team that usually wins only fo have a “hotter” club takes the sectional title. He proposes naming the champion on the basis of results in scheduled games. NEW YORK, Dec. 24 —Bucky Walters, master of the sinker ball and one-half of Cincinnati's -great pitching duo of Walters & Derringer, again is crowned the National League’s greatest pitcher, according to the official averages released -today. For the second straight year, the tall, bow-legged ex-third baseman leads the league in:

Earned Runs—2.48. Most Victories—22. Facing Most Batsmen—1207. Pitching Most Complete Games -—29. Pitching Most Innings—305.

In addition, Walters tied his teammate, Joe Beggs, who specialized in saving games, for the longest winning streak, nine games each. Walters began his streak April 22 against the Cardinals and was beaten June 7 by the Dodgers. Beggs started July 5 against Pittsburgh and lost Sept. 23 to the same club. Claude Passeau, the Cubs’ hardworker, was second in earned runs with 2.50. Truett Sewell, Pirates, was ‘a rurprise third-place finisher with 2.79. Three pitchers tied for the most shutouts with five each. They were Manuel Salvo, ‘Boston Bees; Bill Lohrman, New York Giants, and Whit Wyatt, Brooklyn Dodgers.
