Local Churches Arrange Special Musicfor _ Services During the Christmas |
Masses for Catholics to Begin at 5
Aquinas Choir to Sing Nashville at ‘Midnight.
By EMMA RIVERS MILNER
“And she brought forth her tirstborn Son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.” Thus in the single stroke of a sentence, St. Luke paints a picture of the lowly though triumphant birth of the Christ child. The picture is part of the Gospel to be read in Catholic masses the world over on Christmas (Christ Mass) Day. When the priest finishes reading he will kiss the Book reverently according to the immemorial custom of the church. Wednesday morning before o'clock, services will begin in Indianapolis. Then in the twilight of the churches, the altar will stand forth as the center of worship gleaming with brilliant candles rem-
In
iniscent of Jesus, the Light of the|§
World. The rude wooden crib filled with hay and fashioned after * the Bethlehem manger will invite meditation. And such music as has not been heard since Easter will fill the air. No midnight mass is scheduled for local Catholic churches. But the St. Thomas. Aquinas Choir, only strictly Gregorian church choir in the city, will chant the midnight mass at the new ST. AGNES CHAPEL in Brown County.
Repeat Program Here
Next morning, the zealous singers will repeat the elaborate program of chant at the first mass, at 5 a. m., at ST. THOMAS’ CHURCH in Irdianapolis. A mass composed by Pietro Yon, seldom sung in Indianapolis because it is so very difficult, will be presented by 50 boy choristers and the Schola Cantorum under the direction of Elmer Steffen at 5 and 11 a. m. in the SS. PETER AND PAUL CATHEDRAL. The Most Rev. Joseph E. Ritter, bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis, will pontificate at the ‘high mass at"11 o'clock and the Rt. Rev. Raymond R. Noll, vicar, will celebrate the 5 a. m. solemn high mass. Sister Francis Angels, a new teacher in the Cathedal Grade .School this year, will direct the Cathedral Girls’ Choir in carols at the 7:30 a. m. low mass and at 4 p. m. the Schola, Cantorum will sing devotions in the cathedral. Masses composed by Mr. Steffen are to be sung both at the CHURCH OF THE LITTLE FLOWER here, and in others all over the country.
Children to Sing
An “Ave Maria” composed by Miss Mary Helen Brook, musical director, will be sung by a chorus of 400 children at the 8 a. m. mass in the ST. PHILIP NERI CHURCH. Looking down from the stained glass window in South wall of ST. MARY’S CHURCH which bears her name will be seen the Madonna in the midst of the nativity scene. The window is one of 10 large ones, in the church, imported from Munich, all counted among the religious art treasures of Indianapolis. At the 5 a. m. high mass the Rev. Fr. J. H. Scheefers will offer a prayer at the crib placed just under the nativity window. A new organ on which Christmas music will be played the first time is a feature of the SACRED HEART CHURCH program. Masses will be sung at 4:40, 7: 30, 9:15 and 10:30 a. m.
Crib to Be Arranged
While vested choristers are singing at the crib at the 5 a. m. mass in the HOLY CROSS CHURCH perhaps many people will recall that the 35 hand-carved figures presenting the tableau of the nativity were " brought from Austria by their pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William E. Keefe who died a few weeks ago. Music sung also at 6, 7:30 9, and 10:30 a. m. masses|and at 5 p. m. Trained stage hands will follow an annual custom and arrange the crib as an act of devotion for ST. JOHN’S CHURCH. The Rev. Fr. Bernard Sheridan will celebrate a solemn high mass at 11 a. m. and the Rev. Fr. August Fussenegger will direct the musice. There will be additional masses at 9,7and 10 a.m, Both ST. FRANCIS DE SALES AND ST. CATHERINE'S CHURCHES will mark Christmas in newly decorated interiors. A high mass will be celebrated at \ St. Francis’ at 5 a. m. and a solemn high mass at St. Catherine's at the same hour.. Additional services at the latter church are a 10:30 high mass and a low mass at 6:45, 8 and 9:15 a. m. The Refice composition chosen for the 5:30 a. m. high mass in ST. JOAN OF ARCS CHURCH was described by the Rev. Fr. Edwin Sahm, director, as “unusually rich” and bright and more ambitious than the music usually undertaken by his choirs. The populus part will be sung by grade school boys and girls and the mixed part by 22 men while certain parts will be presented by 75 voices in unison. Other masses will be at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 a. m. The hours for Christmas masses in the remaining Indianapolis Catholic churches are HOLY TRINITY, 4:45, 6, 7:30 and 11 a. m.; ST. PATRICK'S 5, 6, 7:30 and 9 a. m.; ST. JOSEPH’'S 5, 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a. m.; OUR LADY OF LOURDES 5 a. m. and later; ST. ROCH’S 6, 6:30, 7:30, 9:30, 10 and 11:15 a. m.; ST. BRIDGET’S 4:45 and 8 a. m,; ST. ANTHONY'S 10:30 a. m. Masses will be sung at ASSUMPTION CHURCH at 5, 8 and 10 a. m.; at ST. ANN'S at 5, 7 and 8 a. m.; at ST. RITA'S at 5 a. m.; at HOLY ROSARY at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 and 12:10 a. m.; at ST. CHRISTOPHER'S at 5, 8:30 and 10 a. m.; . at HOLY ANGEL'S 5:30 and 7 a. m.; HOLY NAME at 5. 8 and 10 a. m.; OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 a.
Christmas lives in an infant’s face. that Christmas means—and here is “Sandy” to prove it. He is Arthur Charles Echternach, son of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Echternach. There are millions of variations of “Sandy” and all of them are Christmas.

with never failing zest. A few of Clear”; “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night”; “O Little Town of Bethlehem”; “The Birthday of a King.” For the first time in rnany centuries, Christmas Eve masses will be celebrated at midnight, Dec. 24, by the Eastern Orthdox Churches here and around the world. Heretofore, these churches have observed Christmas according to the Julian calendar which marks the day about 13 days later than Dec. 25.
Sing Without Accompaniment
In the Eastern churches, there will be candlelight processionals and unaccompanied singing by the choirs since organs are not permitted. Four congregations have churches here, Bulgarian, Greek, Rumanian and Syrian. This year for the first time, the Rt. Rev. Richard Ainslie Kirchhoffer, bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis, will be the celebrant for the Choral Eucharist beginning at 11 p. m. in ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL. Bishop Kirchhoffer will be assisted hy the Rev. J. C. W. Linsley, vicar. The spirit of international goodwill reflected in the service of carols of many countries in the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church will be intensified this year in view lof the war, Dr. Roy Ewing Vale, pastor, pointed out today. This will be Dr. Vale's first Christmas at | Tabernacle Church. Flemish, Croatian, German, Greek, Mexican and Lapland carols will be sung.
Garlands Used in Church
Garlands of evergreens and a tree raised by Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hendricks will be used by the couple to decorate the Bethany Lutheran Church for the midnight service beginning at 11 o'clock. In addition to the Lutheran festival service there will be anthems, carols and also a sermon by the Rev. J. Luther Seng, pastor. The robed youth and adult choirs will march in a candle light procession and Mrs. Elsie Evans Pattison will give a‘ 15-minute rictal on the new organ at 11 p. m., in the Im-
Church. New copies of all the music to be sung at the Choral Eucharist beginning at 11:15 p. m. in the Episcopal Church of the Advent have been presented to the church by the choir guild. An outstanding selection is Stults’ “Sursum Corda Communion in 2.” Haydn Work to Be Sung
The “Sanctus” from Haydn's “Imperial Mass” is one of the numbers to be sung by the choir of 50 men and boys directed by Cheston Heath at the Choral Eucharist beginning at 11:30 p. /m. in Christ Church on the Circle, The congregation entering the Capitol Avenue Methodist Church at 11:15 p. m. Christmas eve will be given candles to be lighted simultaneously at the stroke of midnight when “Silent Night, Holy Night” will be sung. Other churches holding midnight services are the First and Friends Evangelical and Reformed Churches; St. Matthew's Lutheran, Wallace Street Presbyterian and the First Evangelical Churches. At the close of the midnight service in the Broadway Methodist Church, each member of the congregation will kindle a candle at the altar and go out into the darkness carrying the light. Dr. John F. Edwards, pastor, will preach on “The Littlest Orphan and the Christ Baby” and the choir will sing. : :
