“RESIDENTAL ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA,” edited by Paul Robinson Hunter and Walter Reichardt (Southern: Galifornia Chapter of ‘ the. American Institute of Archi-. tects). Many houses in this volume have received recognition in - nation-wide contests. The book largely devoted to the modern trend, is divided into four sections: the Mediterranean Influence; the California Heritage, Colonial: Precedénts, and Con=temporary Developments. Plans and 200 photographs of interiors and exteriors of 90 homes are included. . “THE BOOK OF LOW COST HOMES” (Simon and Schuster). Plans and specifications for nearly 100 houses, ranging in cost from $1200 to $7500 with helpful discussion of how costs may be cut by careful planning and an intelligent use of new methods and materials. Three-fourths of the houses shown cost less than $5000.

BUILDING IN INDIANA DOUBLES '39 VALUE

New Indiana home building volume in the first 11 months this year was almost twice that of all of 1939, R. Earl Peters, Indiana State FHA director, said today. In 11 months this year, a total of 7011 applications for FHA-insur-ance (amounting to $3,076,250) were received from the Indianapolis territory. This compares with 3809 applications involving $17,076,250 in all of last year. Applications for FHA mortgage insurancz? on existing homes also showed a substantial rise. A total of 10,666 applications involving $45,078,820 were received this year as against 8192 applications amounting to $33,020,069 in all of 1939. “These figures bear out the prediction made at the early part of this year that the summer and fall building seasons here would witness one of the best building periods in the past 11 years,” Mr. Peters said.

Calla Lilies Easy fo Grow: Rich Soil Best for Forcing

Since the war has caused a scarcity of tulip and hyacinth bulbs for forcing this winter, why not try some of the bulbs not usually attempted by amateurs? Yellow and white calla lilies are not especially hard to grow. What

is generally regarded as the flower | face.

is really a modified leaf or spathe. The small flowers are on the clublike appendage (spadix) which arises from the center of the spathe. Plant one tuber to a six-inch pot or several together in a large container and choose only the larger bulbs for forcing. Rich and well~ drained soil is hecessary for proper

development. A good potting mixture consists

of {equal parts of loam, leaf mold and old cow manure, together with some sand and a generous sprinkling: of bonemeal. They should be potted by this week-end. Place enough of the soil

in the pot soAlways empty the saucer a couple
