"IN MURDER CASE
lleged Accomplice ‘© to Testify Against Hawkins Today.
~NEW ALBANY, Ind, Dec. 19 (U. P.).—Clementine Luttrell, 117,
' © Livermore, Ky., an alleged accom-
.. plice, was expected to testify for the " @tate today in the murder trial of ie: gfnte ci. Hawkins, 24, Munfordville, 7 Ye. * Hawkins faces a murder charge in . Floyd Circuit Court in connection ~ with the kidnap-slaying last May of Edmund Davis, 36-year-old Jeffer- ~. sonville taxicab driver.
Prosecutor Frank E. Lorch called the girl after a murder charge against her was dismissed in Clark Circuit Court, making it possible for her to testify without incriminating herself,
Confession Claimed
State witnesses yesterday included State Police detectives who testified that Hawkins wrote a statement in their presence confessing the fatal bludgeoning of Davis. In its opening statement the 8tate demanded the death penalty and said it would attempt to show the defendant was sane at the time ‘of the slaying. The defense said it would try to prove that Hawkins was under the influence of whisky and marijuana cigarets when the crime was committed.
Trace Trio’s Movements
Sixteen other witnesses appeared for the State. as-it attempted to trace the movements of Hawkins, Miss Luttrell and James Hayden, 21, also indicted in the slaying, before and after the body of Davis was found in a clump of weeds near Jeffersonville, = Employees of the cab company where Davis worked identified Hawkins at the man who, with another youth and a girl, entered the victim’s cab the night he was slain.
