THURSDAY, DEC. 19, 1940"
MILITANT POLICES PATROL FRANCE
‘Protection Guard’ In Charge of Peyrouton, New ‘Strong Man.’ VICHY, France, Dec. 19 (U.P). —France is getting a first look dur-
ing the current governmental crisis at a militant, nationalistic brand of
“| super-police clad in tank driver
crash helmets and leather coats with arm-bands lettered “G. P.”— for “Protection Guard.” The people also are getting a new view of six-foot, ambitious Marcel Peyrouton, the Minister of Interior, who controls the secret police and is now believed to be a likely strong man in the future affairs of de-
‘| feated France.
Peyrouton in Control If a contest were held now in the American college fashion to depermine “the man most likely to succeed” it would be difficult to pick anyone inside or outside the Cabinet who could beat Peyrouton, especially since the outser of Pierre Laval as vice premier. While the Interior Minister's future probably will depend on many influences such as Nazi plans for Europe, the G. P. already has made a striking appearance. . The G. P. is not a political organization but a policing group on the Government payroll. | At Petain’s Service The G. P. police are at the service of Marshal Henri Philippe Petain as a special protection guard. It is organized by former leaders of the anti-Communist movement but is described by its officers as definitely Nationalist and not Fascist. Most of the members are in their early 20s and recently were demobilized from the army. They do not live in barracks like other French police but pay their own living expenses from their wages.
MOVES TO RECOVER BABY JEAN'S GIFTS
NEW YORK, Dec. 19 (U. P.).—
ter, Baby Jean, was returned to her by the Royal Fraternity of lJMaster Metaphysicians after they had fed her a dief of vegetables and philosophy -for over a year in the hopes of making her “immortal,” is seeking to recover the baby’s gifts. She said today she had instructed her lawyer to “take such steps as are legal and proper under the circumstances to. recover whatever property belongs to Baby Jean.” “It is a well known fact,” she said, “that on the baby’s birthday, many, many, many, gifts were given to her. A very valuable ring, valued from $5000 to $50,000 was also given to the baby. Yet when they brought the baby to me, they brought some of her clothing, some toys and two small gold baby rings, as well as a cross on a chain, which the baby is wearing. This is all they brought.” James B. Shafer, leader of Master Metaphysicians, said ‘the ring was being held in trust for Baby Jean, until she was 18. It was a present from Mrs. Anne Tomlinson, and was being held by her, he added. He said Baby Jean was returned to her mother because Mrs. Gauntt wanted the. baby.
HUNTER STUDENTS ALL HEARTY EATERS
NEW YORK (U. P.).—Contrary to the general belief that girls are careful of their diet, 6000‘ Hunter College students in. the day and evening consumes an average of 1000 sandwiches, 80 gallons of soup, 85 to 100 pounds of meat, 300 pounds
55 dozen eggs, 40 quarts of puddings, 45 quarts of cream, 460 quarts of milk, 80 pies and 80 layer cakes. In the world’s largest college for women, the average girl prefers sandwiches to hot food for lunch and tuna fish, egg salad, and ham are most popular. Among the hot
|| dishes chow mein is an overwhelm-
ing favorite and in less than two hours more than 80 gallons of chow mein and 35. pounds .of rice are sold.
PRETTY LONDON GIRLS GET MOST FREE RIDES
. LONDON, Dec. 19 U. P.).—Motorists are lending a hand in London to the many people caught in the after-raid rushes on their way to anda from work. . Now the not-so-pretty women of
| London are protesting because the
pretty girls are always picked out by motorists for a free ride. “I have seen motorists creep along the curb, ignoring requests from older and less attractive women, till they come across a pretty one,” one of these pavement wallflowers said. “It is really most unfair.” But, the motorists do not agree, and say that it is the "not-so-youngs and not-so-pretties who are being unreasonable.
