Thanks to “miracle education,” six Pittsburgh pre-school age children are learning to dance by “feeling” the music. Through the vibrations in the wooden floor the children determine the rhythm and keep time for waltzes. two-steps, minuets. The course in dancing is being

and tap dancers and many take part in the ballet numbers staged by the Institute. “Children who can neither speak nor hear need such relaxation as dancing gives,” one of the sisters at the Institute said. “Their muscles are tense and it’s important that they practice good posture and

Years ago dancing seemed out of the question. To educational authorities it seemed impossible to

teach a child born deaf or one who had lost speech and hearing through illness at an early age. But years of study and work with the children resulted in a system. Children enter the dancing:class with no conception of music or rhythm. For 15 minutes, twice a day, they are drilled. In a few months they begin to “feel” the music, determine the tempo and learn to dance to fit. Firet the ' children are grouped

around the piano. The sister has

them place their hands on the side of the instryment. ' They. close thei? eves and are instructed to open them when they no longer “feel” #he music. Next they are seated on the floor, and as the piano plays they place their hands, palm downward, on the floor. With eyes closed they again “feel” the vibrations of the music. The last step is dancing. Standing on the floor they soon learn to “feel” the music through their feet. ; Waltzes are played and in even

rhythm they dance. Quick, light

folk music is played and the children take their cue.

Later when they become familiar with various selections they are enraged to compose their own dances: and add their own dance steps to the class routines.
