BETA FORGED TORELEASE AID AFTER OUSTER

Marshal Premier Overplays Hand “In Europe’s New Order.

(Copyright, 1940, by United Press) Marshal Henri Philippe Petain of France was ready Monday to decide the fate of Pierre Laval on the ‘basis of Laval's private papers seized in a police raid, when Adolf Hitler’s personal envoy arrived posthaste in Vichy with a machine gun guard and forced Petain to release Laval from custody.

Confidential advices from Europe to the United Press yesterday provided the first detailed account of “- the sensational ouster of Laval as Vice Premier of France and the background of the events of the past 72 hours at the quaint French town of Vichy,

These events, in many of their details resembling a dime novel melodrama, can now be told in their proper sequence, sifting the chaff of rumor and speculation from what actually occurred.

Forced to Write Resignation

The swarthy Laval, his fivemonths of effort as an “apprentice dictator” smashed by the stubborn and strong-willed Petain, was forced to. write his own resignation -last Friday night shortly after 8 p. m. in the presence of Petain and the Vichy Cabinet. Petain, in the dramatic session of the Cabinet, openly accused Laval of attempting to seize power] in defeated France. A short time later Laval was seized and placed in custody and s0° remained until yesterday when Adolf Hitler's Ambassador to Paris, Qtto Abetz, demanded that he be relegsed—on Hitler's own orders. « The forced resignation of Laval, who overplayed his hand in carrying out French “collaboration” with Hitler's new European order, was the climax of a long series of incidents that led Petain to accuse his Vice Premier to his face and in the presence of the assembled Cabinet of aspiring to be a dictator.

Wanted to Be Premier

Laval was Foreign Minister as well as Vice Premier and “heir” to , .Petain, but he was unsatisfied with that. He wanted to be Premier, and thereby exert at least as much power as Petain and perhaps more. According to "the private advices reaching the United Press, Laval had not. only greedy eyes on Petain’s authority, but also sought power over the Ministry of Interior, headed by Marcel Peyrouton, the secret police and the Ministry of Finance.. With those depariments in his hands, Petain’s -authority as “chief of state” might be ineffectual.

Office Searched

After his arrest Friday night Laval’s office was searched by lice agents of thé Ministry of Interior, and the Hotel du Pare, headquarters of the Government at Vichy, was surrounded by a force of new super-police known as the “Garde De Protection.” These super police are recruited from young demobilized soldiers and led by former leaders of “Les Cagoulards” (the hooded ones) a Fascist-type underground organization that gave France so much trouble before the outbreak of the war. In addition there were rows of plain clothes secret police of the Surete National and, behind them were rows of Republican guards—

douin out of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and took over the post himself. + Reports then spread that Laval wanted to control the Secret Service and the Ministry of Finance. These reports were never confirmed fully, -but, it was known that Laval wanted to become Premier, a. title which Petain did not assume.

The Garde De Protection forces were commanded by Col. Groussard, formerly of the famous Saint Cyr Military Academy, who has a shaved head and wears a monaocle in the manner of Eric von Stroheim in the motion pictures. At 11 p. m. on Friday, Laval’s chauffeur was arrested as he stood besi the ousted Vice Premier's automobile. Eight plain clothes police, led by the Chief of the Criminal Police Pierre Mondanel, entered the hotel and sprinted up to Laval’s office on the second floor, ripping opep the door.

that he was being taken to a “fixed” residence at his own castle, at Chateldon, 20 miles south of Vichy. He was then locked in the castle with his wife and daughter, Jose, who is the wife of Count Rene de Chambrun, and for three

days armed police maintained lines

around the castle-on-a-rock. : Quarreled Frequently The ouster of Laval—on Friday

the 13th—came as an almost complete surprise to the Vice Premier, according to his friends.

For five months he had been a co-dictator” with Petain but there

had been quarrels and considerable jealousy between Laval and other members of the Cabinet, due partly
