By GERRY DICK: # Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Dec. 18. — When the Army po an ad. in the papers asking for applications: for the job of hostess in training camps; ®& lot. of people got the wrong idea.

The replies gave the Army a severe headache. Many applicants seemed to think all they.need have Was oomph. Many indignant methers, wives and sweethearts wrote in ‘ gcathing missives because they objected to this “lure” of the draftees.

Now the cold, hard fact is that the Army officials take this hostess

business very seriously and have set

a high standard that applicants must reach before being considered. Giggly-gurgly girlies are strictly taboo. : .

This does hot mean that an applicant will be rejected merely because her face is not painful to behold. But she must have other qualifications than mere looks. The government pay is good and the Government requirements are accord-

ingly high. : Each Army training camp is to have an Army service club, run not by private enterprise, but by the Army. Each club is to have a sénjor hostess and two junior hstesses.

The senior hostess must be between 30 and 50, must be a high school graduate and must have had at least three years’ experience as a hostess or equivalent experience in.a similar occupation. Her pay is $2100 per year. Junior hostesses must be

and must have had at least one year’s experience as a hostess. Salary is $1620 per year. The senior hostess will have gerieral charge of the club, provide and conduct all social and recreational features, such as games and dances, in which women from the nearby towns may participate, They will make provision for taking care of women and children relatives of draftees who may visit the camp. One of the junior hostesses will

have: direct charge of the cafeteria maintained for visitors to the camp. The other junior will perform such tasks as the senior assigns to her. . In the World War the: hostess business was entirely in the. hands of civilian organizations, But the Army thinks it best to do the work as part of tite Army’s job this time. Organizations such Y. M. C. A, Knights of Columbus, Young Men's Hebrew Association and Salvation Army will not be allowed to have houses in the Army camps. But the
