'One Million B. C.'
By DAVID MARSHALL
THE TYRANNOSAURUSES are coming! With them will be drytosauruses, - dimetrodons, triceratopses, trachodons, scolosauruses and maybe one or two paleoscincuses. * They are all monsters of the dinosaur family who’ll arrive tomorrow in “One Million B. C.” at the Strand, Rivoli and Granada theaters. It’s a first city showing and is all about life and love 60 million years ago. The practically contemporary title is just for convenience. Carole Landis plays the role of Loana of the Shell people, a tribe which is definitely hostile to the Rock Tribe. Akhoba (Lon Chaney Jr.), chief of the Rock Tribe, conveniently has a dark and handsome son, Tumak (Victor Mature) who gets together with Loana and then they both unite the tribes. Cute? Advance information promises “70 -ton prehistoric monsters locked in mortal combat, stampede of weird monsters as flaming lava engulfs their forest home, volcanic ‘eruptions that rend the earth in two, entire tribe menaced by 100-foot man-eaters” and particularly “world’s first lovers surmounting primeval dangers.” At all theaters “One Million B. C.” will be doubled with Laurel and

program for tonight and moved in “Strike Up the Band” plus “Lady in Question.” Both will remain through Saturday. 2 ” 8 WE HOPE THE gratifying reception of the Strand’s food show is an indication of what will happen at the remaining shows Friday, Saturday and Monday. Some 800 kids jammed the Strand the day before Thanksgiving giving as their admission 1200 cans of food which were distributed by the Church of the Holy Cross. All the food shows are being sponsored by the theaters in which they are held and the Photoplay Indorsers of Indianapolis, Parent-Teacher Association groups, churches, and American Legion posts. The Ritz will hold its show at 3:30 p. m. Friday under the auspices of the Photoplay Indorsers, the P.-T. A. and American Legion Auxiliary of Post 4. Garfield Post 88 of the American Legion will be co-sponsor of a food show at the Fountain Square Saturday at 9:30 a. m., Half an hour later the P.-T. A. of School 3 will sponsor the Tacoma food show. The State, Mecca and Stratford shows also are on Saturday. The Speedway’s show is that day at 2 p. m. while the Vogue has arranged a spécial program and a cartoon-carnival revue plus the
| regular show at 1.30 p. m.
The P.-T. A. of Schools 12 and 22 are co-sponsors of the Oriental’'s food show at 10 a. m. Satur= day along with the Photoplay Indorsers. 2 2 2
IF THOSE monsters above weren't enough to chill you, “The Mysterious Doctor Satan” certainIt’s the new chapter play (we used to call them serials) which opens Saturday - at the Rivoli. The 15 episodes tell the harrowing story of Dr. Satan (Edward Ciannelli) a master criminal who has invented a mechanical man to terrorize the nation. Time and again (at least 15 times, probably more) the “Copperhead,” a modern Robin Hood in a copper mask, gets there just in time to halt some dire happening. In the process the Copperhead is almost, but never quite, exploded, electrocuted, smothered,

10 SOLOISTS) |
By JAMES THRASHER
THE RULE concerning gift horses applies even more strongly, I believe, to Christmas gifts. But whatever laudatory words may follow regarding the Jordan Copservatory’s annual Christmas concert arise not. from politeness, but from enthusiasm and a remembrance of
genuine enjoyment.
- Fabien Sevitzky, who finds time to head the conservatory’s or- | chestra department as well as
conduct our symphony orchestra, presided over the school’s 92piece student orchestra at ‘the Murat last night. Sharing honors were James Hosmer, flutist, and Lynne Wainwright, harpist, who played the Mozart concerto for those two instruments; Dr. Hugo Grimm, the Cincinnati composer, who conducted his own “Peter and - Wendy” suite, and Leon Zawisza, who conducted the concerto. The Jordan orchestra has made remarkable strides in the last 10 But last night's performance surpassed anything they have done before. There were fine precision and good tone, excellent balance and an alert attention. Furthermore, the players spirit and enthusiasm were such as to infect the listener and
render any rough spots insignifi- |
cant in the face of them. ”® ® ”
A HANDFUL of symphony orchestra players sat in to backstop the ensemble, but the great majority of the players were from the student body. Also on hand were some older but no less ar--dent amateurs who have been with the orchestra from some time. And it was pleasant to ‘note that a bald-headed father in the viola section has been joined this year by his daughter who is capable of playing the _cello parts—even though she still wears hair ribbons. The orchestra gave a vousing account of Glinka’s “Russian and Ludmilla” overture to open the concert, and then romped through the first two movements of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” with - nimbleness and assurance. They resolved Dr. Grimm's problems of rhythm and style with credit, and brought the evening to a pleasant, Christmasy close with. Tschaikowsky’s “Nutcracker” Suite, Dr. Grimm’s “Petar and Wendy” music disclosed maSiy good quale ities. Particularly notable were
a flair for the pictorial and a -
keen sense of musical humor (a rare and elusive quality, that) expressed with an assured feeling for “modern” harmony and rich orchestral color. = The audience received his Barrie-esque music with cordial and insistent applause. * 8 8
AS FOR the soloists, they gave

celient impression he has made on previous appearances. And Miss Wainwright, in her first non-orchestral performance here, showed herself to be a brilliantly
equipped player. » She possesses not only an informed style-but a virtuoso technique — which she needed, for her role in the concerto may best be described as devilish. It might be noted that the concerto also presented Mr. Zawisza, the symphony orchestra's concertmaster, in his local debut as a conductor. He performed his task capably and deserves several extra words of credit for his rehearsal preparation of the student orchestra in their program. Mr. Sevitzky again lavished as much care upon the young group as he does on his professional orchestra. His direction was always clear and sensitive, and the results were admirable. He, the school and all concerned, are to be congratulated and thanked for a delightful evening. Since the crowded Murat could not hold all those who requested tickets, there was a half-hour broadcast from the theater’s stage shortly after the concert. A large part of the earlier audience remained for a second serving.
