employed largely on oversea reconnaissance work. Quite a number of Royal Air Force squadrons are equipped with this type and their operations have been most successThese Hudson squadrons have had to operate under extremely. arduous conditions over the North Sea.and Atlantic Ocean. Their reliability has been remarkable and their flying qualities in all weathers and under all conditions are greatly appreciated by the British pilots.

Stand Up in Tests

Although the nature of their work is not such as to lead to much combat work, they have very frequently encountered opposition of the heavfest nature, both from anti-aircraft and fighter aircraft. Invariably they have emerged successfully from these encounters and not a few of the German aircraft destroyed have been victims of the Hudsons. «= On occasions it has been necessary for these aircraft closely to reconnoiter over areas very heavily defended by anti-aircraft guns and the punishment they have - taken without in any way affecting the continued efficient functioning of ‘| every part of the aircraft has been a source of admiration to the crews.

Few of Newer Types Tried

Newer types of aircraft have not yet reached England in any great numbers and hardly any have yet been .in action. The Curtiss P40, called the Tomahawk by the Royal Air Force, is now in quantity production and a considerable number have reached England. No squadron of this type has, as far as is known, however, yet been in action, but the British pilots re- - |port it is a nice airplane to fly, and that in speed and maneuverability

RAP BROADCASTERS IN MUSIC BATTLE

NEW: YORK, Dec. 16 (U. P.)— Ten prominent music educators charged today that broadcasters were trying “to deny the public its own property . . . and force it to accept ‘ersatz’ music.” They formed a committee, which will circularize 2000 educational institutions, to demand intervention of the Federal Communications Commission before Jan. 1, when all of the major networks and stations outlaw music controlled by the American Society of Composers, Authors and | Publishers, and substitute the tunes and arrangements of Broadcast Music, Inc., a radiosubsidized organization. BMI meanwhile gathered another ally in Harry Brandt, president of the Independent Theater Cwners of America, who denounced the ASCAP system of licensing motion picture houses. EASTERN CITY OPENS SIX TYPHOID CLINICS

ROCHESTER, N. Y., Dec. 16 (U. P.).—Health authorities opened six typhoid fever vaccination clinics in public schools today in an effort to check illness among 324,000 residents menaced by contaminated drinking water. Three innoculations are necessary for immunization against typhoid. Private physicians and hospitals continued to report cases of extreme nausea and dysentery. Dr. Paul A. Lembcke, state health officer, said the city’s general health situation was little changed from last week

‘fwhen an estimated 1000 persons

consulted doctors regarding “symptoms of diarrhea.” Dr. Lembcke explained that the Health Department would not be able to determine whether typhoid fever had broken out among resi-

of the characteristic slowness of the disease to materialize. In the meantime, efforts will be made to Jaguinate the entire population, he said.
