Competition began this afternoon for the $200 top prize in the Antler Alleys Pot-O’-Gold bowling tournament, with more teams taking the drives this evening. Late entries were expected to set a new record for the 14-year-old meet, which up to last night had

Teams will have a starting handicap equal to 75 per cent of the difference between 1050 and their league averages. Besides the top prize, teams will compete for 21 other prizes ranging from $10 to $100. Last nights best bowling score in league competition was turned in by Bob Kelly, who put together games of 224, 234 and 224 for a 692 total in the Washington League at the Illinois Alleys. Carl Walraven took second place with his 670, made in the Murphy's Tavern League at the West Side plant. Kenny Christensen, also rolling in the Washington League, took thrid place with a 668. Pitt Stays Out
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 14 (U. P.) —John L. Griffith, commissioner of athletics in the Western Conference, attended the University of Pittsburgh footfall banquet last night and told interviewers that Pitt's membership in the Conference has never been discussed. “The status of the University of Pittsburgh as regards the Western Conference has not- changed a bit since our initial arrangement,” Major Griffith said. 3 The ~ “arrangement” announced Feb. 1, 1939, is a, mutual agreement under which Pitt adheres to Big Ten Conference rules and submits * athletic problems to Major Griffith to solve.
CHARLOTTE, N. C., Dec. 14 (U. P.) —Southern Conference coaches today gave themselves a clean bill of health, announcing that they had been unable to find any violations of coaching ethics this year and that it would be completely unnecessary to draft a “code of ethics.” . The “code” was suggested at last year’s meeting when Coach Wallace Wade of Duke and Jess Neely, then coach at Clemson, charged that certain Conference coaches had offered contracts to high school football players and presented - other players with “expensive gifts.” Public airing of these troubles apparently cleared up the matter, the coaches said, and during the past year “there was not a single violation of this nature reported.” Furthermore, the coaches said,
there were no other violations of the ethical code of any kind. The coaches selected Rex Enright of South Carolina as president of their committee and named Wil-

Louis Thesz will e the semiwindup spot on the mat card at the Armory next Tuesday night where Ray Steele appears in defense of his title against Ray Villmer. Pat Fraley, 225, the aggressive Nebraska grappler, will tackle the

as king of the heavies. The headliner will mark the second time this season that the rugged Ray Villmer, 222, of St. Louis,

Steele. In their first meeting, Villmer got away to a fast start by grabbing the first fall and contin-

The first Steele-Villmer encounter was a lively affair and some of Villmer’s followers believe that he has a strong chance of upsetting the titleholder when they grip next Tuesday night. Steele scales 218 and is from California.

"cOO0D MUSIC" By James Thrasher
The Jordan Conservatory of Music ran into the rather embarrassing predicament of having more potential recipients than presents for their annual Christmas party. But conservatory officials called on WIRE for assistance, and a satisfactory solution has been effected. The Christmas party takes the form of an orchestra concert conducted by Fabien Sevitzky. And the presents were free seats for the performance at the Murat on Tuesday night at 8:30. Requests soon used up all the tickets, and the public kept clamoring for more. So Miss Ada Bicking, the school’s director, arranged with the local station to broadcast 30 minutes of the concert from the Murat, beginning at 10:30 p. m. the disappointed ticketseekers and the rest of the radio audience Mr. Sevitzky will lead the 92 student players in the Overture to Glinka’s “Russland and Ludmilla” Overture and Tschaikowsky's “Nutcracker” Suite. Miss Bicking will give a brief greeting at the start of the broadcast. There will be two two guest conductors in the non - broadcast concert. Leon Zawisza, the In- . dianapolis Symphony’s concert= master, will conduct the Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp, with James Hosmer and Lynne ‘Wainwright, also orchestra members, as soloists. Mr, Sevitzky And Dr. Hugo Grimm will be on hand te lead the performance of
“ON THE RADIO
his own work, “Peter and Wendy.”
Incidentally, if you are one of the lucky seat holders you must be in that seat by 8 p. m. Otherwise it, will be given to one of the standees.
® 2 8 The New York PhilharmonicSymphony Orchestra’s broadcast schedule is tough on the swing fans, for it has left Benny Goodman off the air. The versatile clarinetist made his debut with the Philharmonic this week, playing the Mozart A Major Concerto. But his two appearances didn’t fall in the series, which includes the Sunday afternoon performances. So e . swing-sweet-and-serious virtuoso will be missing from tomorrow’s broadcast. | However, there’s a very capable substitute (that derogatory identification is for swing enthusiasts only) in the person of Joseph Schuster, the orchestra’s principal cellist. For his solo appearance Mr. Schuster has selected the Mozart Cello Concerto. * Also on the program are the Overture to Weber's “Oberon”| and the Brahms Symphony No. 2. This will be John Barbirolli’s last radio stint before his midwinter vacation. For the four weeks beginning next Sunday his place will be taken by Dmitri Mitropoulos, the brilliant conductor of the e-| apolis Symphony Orchestra. 8 a8 8 .
The New Friends of Music Orchestra, conducted by Fritz Stiedry, will begin a series of 10 broadcasts from Carnegie Hall in New York at 5:05 p. m. tomorrow on NBC-Blue. On the program is the world premiere of Arnold ~ Schoenberg's Second Chamber Symphony. This is the first symphonic work from Schoenperg’s pen in 25 years. : 2 @® ”
Soloists on other music broadcasts tomorrow include Bidu Sayao with Reginald Stewart and the Detroit Symphony, CBS-WFBM, 8 p. m. . Ossy Renardy, violinist, with Erno Rapee and the Radio City Music Hall, NBC-Blue, 11 a. m. . . . Gladys Swarthout and Albert Spading with Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra, CBS-WFBM,'3:30 . . . .
