On to Elwood

Don McCammon of the Elwood Call-Leader calls our attention to the Elwood-Tipton rivalry. “They may come with more publicity but they don’t come with more po-, tency or consistency. ” says Mr. McCammon. No one knows just when these affairs started for it was before of such things, Don reports, but it’s been a “you tag me, 1 tag ‘you” affair for lo these many years. Both teams can be depended upon to be generous and give the visitors a one-point. decision. So Elwood wins at Tipton and the Blue Devils win at Elwood. J. P. (Hunk) Francis’ Elwood

Panthers have the advantage in the past two years, however. They won both games last year—both in the last minute—and the ‘home game last week, again by one point and in the last minute. years ago both games were onepoint, last-minute affairs with the visitors winning both times.

1938-39 Was Typical

Take 1938-39 as typical. Elwood won the first game that year, 38-37. Mulford (Muff) Davis, who has led the Central Indiana Conference in scoring for the past two years, played his first game that night and got 31 - points. But Mick Carmody was the hero. His shot from behind the center was in the air when the gun went off and it went home like a pet pup.

Tipton won the second game,

32-31. The one-half minute sign was on the scoreboard when Red Jones let go from behind center and the gun sounded before the ball ripped the net. In the first game last year the

score was tied at 31-31, with one:

minute to go. But Elweod put three through in that minute to win, ‘37-31, for the biggest margin in an El decade. The Panthers won the second game of that season, too. It was 17-16 with Muff Davis scoring 15 points and tossing in a last-second, hook shot. With this win over Coach Johnny Ward's Devils, Elwood cinched the Conference title. And so it goes. The first game of this year’s pair was played at Elwood and Elwood won it, 29-28. “Ray Nuding went through the entire team to hit just as the hali-minute-sign flopped over,
