Actor Thanks Bundles for Britain Here
“you are sending munitions of comfort and healing to the British people in what is largely a battle of morale,” Maurice Colbourne,
English actor, told ~members of Bundles for Britain, Inc. yesterday at B luncheon in the. Columbia Club. Mr. Colbourne is appearing in “There Shall Be No Night,” now playing at English’s Theater. England, he said, has a “continuity of a way of living” which doesn't change, “even the plumbing and the boiled cabbage.” This, he pointed out, is helping to keep up their morale. s ‘Even the children are “keeping up their spirits,” according to Mr. Colbourne. He told members of two children who went down the street tothe cinema. The building was bombed and the mothet was dashing about frantically trying to find if they had been injured. Four hours later, the two toddlers came in with the explanation: “The cinerna we went to was bombed so we went to A bombed: barber shop; ‘he said, carried on with this tiny sign “We had a close shave this morning, have you?” Another shopkeeper on finding his place of business bombed, put out this sign: “We are now more open for business than ever.” “The warmer the clothing sent the ‘British people, the more it will be appreciated,” Mr. Colbourne said. “It is hard for you to understand the need for such heavy clothing here because your way of living is so superior to the English plumb-
He described for the local branch members the activities in the New York office where the American contributions are crated for shipment. Two hundred and fifty large crates are dispatched each week, he said. The work for members of the Amer-ican-inspired organization with its 250 branches is unending, he explained, as one can not be sure that
the supplies will reach their desti-
nation because of the shipping risks. He pointed out that no consignment of the Bundles for Britain goods, had been denied a place on a ship. “I want to thank you for what you have done, are doing and are going to do for Britain,” he said. “I don’t like to tell Americans what fo do for they are quite able to decide for themselves. Just imagine what the thanks would be if thoughts in Brit-
ain could come through the bottle-
neck of my vocal cords and then spread out again into the whole United States.” Mr. Colbourne’s services were offered to the organization by -Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, stars of “There Shall Be No Night” and active supporters of the war relief cause. : William Macgregor Morris introduced Mr. Colbourne. Seated at the speaker's table with them were the Mesdames Alvin Owsley, Oscar Torian, Charles Culp, H. K. Metcalf, Harry R. Wilson, Dr. George Jackson, Hugh McK. Landon and Dr Torian.
