“But they don’t know the Sheri-
dan,” the Sheridan said. “Ive been
saving my money for five years — and I can sit just as tight as they can.” The redhaired Miss S., whose crimson pajamas revealed the proper curves in the proper places, didn’t look hungry, even though
Miss Sheridan she hasn’t col-
lected a pay check for four months —and may not get another one for five years.
The Warners suspended her from
the payroll last August because. she
refused to exude oomph from thew screen any longer for a mere $600 a week. She demanded $2000. The Warners offered $1000. Unless there is a compromise at around $1500, Annie seems to be stymied by a brace of legal clauses. “They’ve got me under a contract with five more years to go, and if I don’t work for them, I can’t work for anybody,” she said. “But if they're trying to starve me into submission, they've got another think coming. » The trouble now seems to be that the Warners won’t phone Annie; and Annie’ll be doggoned if she'll phone them. “Not that I want to be unreasonable,” she said. “If what they want is a moral victory, {that's okay: All I want is the cash. The cash is one of those problems. Last year Annie said she earned $19,500 by working in so many movies she’s still a little dizzy. When she finished paying. taxes, agents, servants, managers and dressmakers (oomph girls: must have oomph clothes) there wasn’t much left. “I know $600 a week sounds like]

a lot to people making $40,” Annie continued, “but I have no illusions about ‘myself. I'll ‘last about five more years. in movies, with luck, and after that I'll. be 30 years old. I'll be through. So I've got to make the money now, or not at all.” She said furthermore that she didn’t ‘consider her demands unreasonable. In the last five months she worked, she starred in five hit pictures. “One of them I remember was ‘They Drive By Night’,” she said. “In the first eight weeks of its run, that one picture made better than $1,000,000 profit. There’s something wrong when they can’t pay the redhead her fair share of the loot.” That still isn’t all.’ “The Warners’ red-head said | there's been man a report from a source she coul mention, buf . wouldn’t, that she either has married George Brent, or is about to do same, and that in the meantime he’s giving her a lot of bum advice.| 'Tain’t true. “Every time I go out with some man three or more times, I'm married to him,” -Annie said.

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (U. P.) —The disconcerting news from the Divorce

During the past year, according to the league’s annual report, no fewer than 71,546 husbands deserted their wives. Just up and vanished, for There were
But, the league points out, there undoubtedly were many. more 34 women who .deserted their husbands during ‘that period. The answer is—and this is the league’s own explanation: \ “The wife is usually anxious to find her husband, for he is the main support of the family, which puts the case on record, while the husband, being relieved of responsibility, does not try to locate his wife.”

FREE MEDICINE: PLAN ASSAILED
Termed ‘Utopian Scheme’ |. By Eastern Doctor in Speech Here.
The average citizen likes to believe that medical care ought to be provided free by the Government
because such utopian schemes offer him an escape from life's realities, Dr. Terry H. Townsend, past president of the New York State Medical Society, said last night. Dr. Townsend addressed the Methodist Hospital medical staff on “The. Doctor Looks at the Citizen.” “The Doctor looks at the citizen and. finds him a willing tool in the hands of the profesisonal, political charlatan who continually tells him what he likes to believe,” he said. The defect in this and other plans to provide security for the individual, he said, is human nature. He urged the group to “accept these difficulties instead of trying to
escape them.”
