vives Demands in Congress For Independent CAA.
By CHARLES T. LUCEY . Times Special Writer |
ate Investigation of the United Afr Lines crash at Chicago, which killed nine persons, was pledged today by Senator Bennett C. Clark (D. Mo.) Senator Clark heads a special
disaster which cost 25 lives three months ago, He said today his committee had authority to include the Chicago accident in its scope, as well us a Utah crash last month which killed 10. “I believe all three crashes should be studied,” Senato” Clark said, “and as soon as there are sufficient Senators in Washington to provide
the most thorough investigation possible.” Senator Clark would ‘make no comment in regard to causes of the Chicago crash, or concerning moves to restore the Civil Aeronautics Authority to its former independent status. It was regarded here possible, «| noweyer, that out of this investiga~ {tion would grow new demands that the agency ' responsible for civil aeronautics development and regulation be taken from ‘the Commerce Department, where it was placed by one of President Roosevelt’s reorganization moves. Senator McCarran (D. Nev.) has served notice ‘that he would fight in the next Congress:to restore the CAA to an independent position. Senators also have criti¢ized abolition of the Air Safety Board,
crashes and enforce safety - yrovisions. It was able to pass -independent judgment on the CAA, the air lines or anyone else. Senator McCarran h charged that “we destroyed all *gsafety assurance that was provided by law when the Air Safety Board was abolished.”
