Sheffield and Irving Miller.

Parents of the 200 children who use the Bates St. tunnel, rapidly becoming a major problem at City Hall, today were drafting resolutions

to be sent to the Mayor, the Works Board and Police Chief Michael Morrissey asking for a remedy. The pedestrian tunnel, which goes under the five-track crossing in the 900 block of Bates St., is branded by parents in the neighborhood as “a health, safety and moral hazard.” The tunnels history contains numerous injuries from falls, children accosted by cranks and drunks and similar occurences. Yesterday the P.-T. A. of School 7, which is two blocks from the tunnel, adopted resolutions asking for the immediate assignment of a policeman at the turinel during the hours when the school children are using

it.

the datk, damp, tunnel, parents say, that they have instructed their children to cross the tracks at the risk of being struck by a train rather than enter the tunnel when persons are loitering there. The parents believe that the tunnel should be widened to include the street and lights erected and adequate drainage provided. Members of the committee which has been working for a solution of the problem includes Mrs. Floyd Simpson, P.-T. A. president, Mrs. L. D. Sheffield and Irving Miller.
