YOUR NEGATIVE THRUST ADDS TO FLIGHT’S | RANGE
It's Protideed iy by Slanting The ‘Prop’ Shaft Slightly Downward.
BY DAVID MARSHALL With the plans of pearly every contest type rubber-powered model, the rookie model builder will find a puzzling note which usually reads something like this:
“Two degrees negative thrust,” or :
#Two degrees downthrust.” - You might think that negative thrust was something the plane would better be without, but without negative thrust you'll never get long flights from your model. Negative thrust is produced by slanting the propeller shaft bearing or noseblock so the shat} points “slightly. downward. : It’s Hard to Measure
The degrees of negative thrust are measured on the angle formed by ‘the theoretical thrust line, which is directly forward, and the actual thrust line after slanting the noseblock. The amount of negative thrust (or downthrust) depends upon the flight tendencies of the individual model. It’s hard to measure so most model builders = determine: the correct amount by fight-testing their ships. When the model is in flight downthrust tends to pull the nose of the plane down and cause it to dive. But this tendency is present only when the plane is under power. - When the power ceases, the prop ‘goes free-wheeling and the plane glides, free from the forces of negative thrust. , Experts use downthrust because the diving tendency which it produces makes it necessary for the wing to-be placed well forward on the fuselage.
Builds Up Endurance
But with the downthrust, when the power is exhausted and: the model is high in the air, the wing is far enough toward the nose to produce a flat glide. This builds up the endurance of the ship. You might think that the negativé thrust method means that the stabi®lizer and wing are not proportioned “correctly, But there is no arrangement. of surfaces which would produce the wide differences in a model's performance when it has power on and when it is gliding. The proper way to determine the correct amount of - negative thrust is to first glide the model. = Adjust the wing for the best possible glide. Then try the plane with a few winds in the rubber motor. Chances are it wil] stall, so be over a grassy field. Then place a strip of onesixteenth hard balsa between the noseblock and the fuselage on the top side and-try it with power again. Keep increasing the sizet of the strip behind fhe noseblock until the ship climbs without stalling. The wing adjustment then should not be changed from the place of perfect glide. ”
Uses Scotch Tape
To show the workmanship within his model, Jack Schieder of Trenton, N. J, covered one of his ships with cellophane. The covering was shrunk tight by giving the model a steam bath. Jack reports that repairs can be neatly done on this type covering by simply using strips of transparent scotch tape.

Non-Defense Balance Plan Expected.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (U. P.).— Congressmen whose job it is to raise and spend billions of dollars .annually today generally favored a proposal for creation of a joint Senate and House committee to help Congress balance the non-defense budget. The plan will be submitted to the new Congress by Rep. Clifton A. Woodrum (D. Va.), a leader of the House economy bloc. It would place on'the new committee all members of the House Ways and _ Means, Senate Finance, and both appropriations committecs, and the Senate and House Democratic and Republican leaders. The proposal undoubtedly will receive Administration approval since a similar plan proposed by Chairman Pat Harrison of the Senate Finance Committee last year was favored by Secretary of the "Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr. Bills Frequently Changed
The present fiscal set-up in Congress calls for the House Appropriations Committee to receive the President’s budget and work out detailed appropriation bills. Those are frequently changed in the Senate, as is tax legislation which originates in the House Ways and Means Committee. Appropriation bills, being the first-major business on the calendar, are enacted without regard to revenue or new taxes to be proposed. Mr. Woodrum’s joint committee would discuss the normal, or nonmilitary, budget, consider the revenue situation and recommend to the Appropriations and Tax Committees what is needed to keep the budget in balance. The regular committees would then proceed with their work, but could disregard the suggestions. ‘Time to Close Gap’ —-Eocles Federal Reserve Board Chairman Marriner S, Eccles told a New York meeting last week that he believed it was time to try to “close the gap between income -and outgo as far as can be done without confiscatory taxation or the retarding of private expenditures.” Mr. Eccles’ off-the-record address to the National Industrial Conference Board was released belatedly because, he said, of “incorrect and misleading accounts” that were published yesterday. He denied that he had advocated a $2,500,000,000 loan to Great Britain but disclosed that he had suggested the desirability of Congress considering credits to that country, with British gold and holdings here and
