The Tests Are Varied

This Ohio State University graduat, with both B. S. and Master's degrees in psychology, spends his time giving all sorts of tests to Indianapolis pupils. From these, he learns things that many times make the difference between pupils passing or failing. The results also make certain that a pupil’s ability is developed as fully as possible beyond the barely passing level.

+ This is Mr. Sparks first year here. He was school psychologist for three years at Mansfield, O. But he has been responsible for some interesting things here already. By tests he found one boy who was doing poorly in school was handicapped by weak vision. It hurt his eyes to concentrate on a written lesson for more than a minute. Therefore he was poor in memory work. Glasses have been recommended and the boy’s performance is expected to zoom.

Just Needed More Help Another boy made a very low

‘|grade on a reading lesson. By test-

ing the boy’s ability, Mr. Sparks found his I. Q. to be high. Arrangements were made to give the boy additional instruction in reading so that his school performance could catch up with his ability. Three conditions bring Mr. Sparks into a particular school with his arms loaded with puzzles, patterns and written tests. One is a case of behavior maladjustment in the school or home. Another is the presence of a retarded or physically handicapped child. The third is subnormal results on standard tests given in all schools.

One important aspect of Mr. Sparks’ tests is that he can measure ability of pupils without the use of reading, writing or spoken language. He Removes Barriers

Thus he can cut through barriers that might block a true test of a youngster’s capacity for learning. After he has found that out, then he can determine which one of those handicaps may be retarding the pupil. Fifteen per cent of Indianapolis pupils are weak in reading for other reasons than ability. If he finds this to be true for a pupil, Mr. Sparks can recommend to the child’s teacher that she give him additional help. Mr. Sparks uses blocks, picture and object puzzles, patterns and mazes. . The time a child takes to solve one of these tests measures his ability. Children who are having extreme difficulty in getting their lessons can

: |be transferred to special classes.
