IF t. Wayne Trio May Clean Up In State Race

Three ~ Powerhouses Indicated by Dope.

By UNITED PRESS An examination of early season dope indicates today that some of the powerhouses

of Hoosier high school basket-|

ball teams this year may develop from among the ranks of teams outside the seven

major Indiana conferences.

In this connection, all arrows point to Ft. Wayne where observers say North Side, South Side and Central shape up as a trio of juggernauts to contend with in the unfolding hardwood campaign.

" All three schools have . dropped from the Northeastern Conference, and although North Side has affiliated with the Northern Indiana Conference, it isn’t eligible until next year-and can be considered a non-conference team. Lest anyone has forgotten, both

[North and South finished the sea-

son last year with 17 wins and 3 defeats, : Lost Only Four But let’s take a look at the NorthLast year they were terrific and Coech Bob, Nulf can gloat that he lost but four players via graduation. . As a framework. for this year's team Nulf has six veterans in Short, Harrison, Popp, Hinga, Young, Ervin and Cowan. With the exception of a weak spot at center created by the loss of Jack Keller from last year’s squad, these boys shape up as experienced hands for another great team, Add to that competent reserves and the fact that at least two regulars, Hinga ‘and Short, are capable of holding down the center

DREAMS OF GIRL,

Wilma Beryl Nail Dies After 20th Operation to ~ Erase Scars.

For* years, 16-year-old Wilma Beryl Nail had dreamed of the day when surgery would erase the disfiguring scars she received in childhood. Yesterday, she cheerfully prepared for an operation—one of a series of about 20 she had undergone at Riley Hospital. The operation, like those that preceded it, appeared successful. Wilma came out of the anesthetic and seemed to be feeling well. Then she died. Wilma’s mother, Mrs. Earl Nail, 2022 E. 42d St., said no one could account for the ‘tragedy. Physicians believed it might have resulted from a heart ailment.

Burned When a Baby

“When Wilma was 4 months old,” Mrs. Nail said, “she fell from her high chair onto a stave and almost her entire face was badly burned, leaving deep scars. “As she got older, the scars didn’t change her personality—she had an exceptionally sunny disposition. “When she was 9, the doctors began operating on her to remove the scars, bit by bit, and she looked fotward eagerly. to .the day when she would have an unscarred face, “The doctors had done wonders in previous operations. They had given her a new nose and cheek and were about to make her a new lip. It would have taken only a few

Loved to Skate

Wilma was a freshman at Tech High School, and previously had attended School 91. She made good grades in school, loved to skate and was fond of music, Mrs. Nail said. She was a member of the Baptist Church,

job, and you havea ‘potent factor in winning ball games — experience. And if the boys haven’t lost the zip displayed last year, they'll have speed and more speed. And now to the South Side Archers. They didn’t fare as well as North Side in the matter of losing last year’s players. With only center Bob Hines left from last year’s finalist aggregation, Coach Bur] Friddle might ordinarily be expected to have a problem on his hands. Maybe .he has. But all the reports blowing out of the north indicate a tough. club is brewing in the Archer camp.

Has Speed, Size

Friddle is reported grooming a flock of material that may lack experience, but will make up for it in speed and size, They're big, awfully big. Hines, only returning regular, and two boys from last year’s squad, Shimer and Feistkorn, easily top six feet and the rest of the roster|s

The Central Tigers have no less reputation: than their sister teams this year. Reports are that they are big, fast and experienced, and no wonder. From last year’s fine team Central has five regular holdovers in Wilkin, Shaw, Tackett, Talley and Miller. In addition, a flock of big, strong and heady boys are left from last year who should help round Central into a team to contend with. It may be that the apparent class of the Pt. Wayne clubs will pale ih

the glare of other non-conference!

teams. Mitchell's Bluejackets, for example. Runnersup for the state title last year, they may round into shape although they took an awful beating from Jasper last week, Reports are that Mitchell will build another strong quintet around their classy center, Roy Ramey,

Besides her parents, Wilma leaves three sisters, Mrs. Wayne Pauley, Hialeah, Fla.; Miss Esther Nail, a roller skater now with the Transcontinental Roller Derby in Tulsa, and June Delores Nail; a twin brother, William, and: her grandparents, Joshua Nail and Mr. and James Rumrill of Indianapolis. » Arrangements for services, which probably will be Friday, have not been completed.
