At First, Has Proved Itself in Several Fields; Allison Motors Power Some Models. LONDON, Dec. 3 (U. P.).—An estimated 2500 United
States-built aircraft of all types already have been Gelivered here and are taking part in the life-and-death battle of
Britain,
Nearly half are Harvard trainer pon-combat ships.
The British generally praise the quality and performance of American planes,
but except for the Lockheed
Hudsons, whose merits frequently | are mentioned in communiques, | official silence is maintained about the performance of the types in service here. Received coolly at first, the Hudsons now are rated ace -high by the coastal command which useses them and are considered as effective as Britain's prized all - purpose Blenheims. : War experience, however, has shown the need for im- puke of Kent provements in design and armor in American
lanes P At first the Hudsons were considered good for improvised civilian craft, but they since have been used for long-range reconnaissance and bombing and even dive-bombing and have passed all tests successfully, British pilots report. One pilot, who used a Hudson to dive-bomb ships, said it was somelike entering an auto race with an omnibus and winning.

for Brewster single-engined fighters, which they describe as a plane so easily /maneuverable that it can turn on a dime. The presence of ‘Brewsters and Douglas Boston BB-Ts here was confirmed when the
Duke of Kent inspected them last tain
September. Others in Use - Other types of planes whose delivery has been reported in the press in gre the Curtiss Hawk 75-A, known in the United States as the PT-36 single-seater fighter; the Curtiss Hell-Diver two-seater scout bomber, and the Northrup A-17 attack bomber ~ Reports roe British representatives or manufacturers describe delivery of other types including the Grumman fighter, Bell Airacobra Allison powered fighter, Consolidated flying-boats and Consolidated four-motored bombers, Lockheed P-38 twin-Allison motored interceptors, Voight-Sikorsky naval divebombers and flying fortresses. lord Beaverbrook, Minister of Airersft Production, meanwhile is making 8 dynamic drive to build up Britain's production and fulfill the prophecy by Prime Minister Winston Churchill that “In 1941 we shall have command of the air.”
Production Growing Under the Beaverbrook leadership, British aircraft production figures have mounted steadily in the face of continues hammering by German bombers. Beaverbrook subscribes to the the ory voiced by another minister, Hugh Dalton, that there are too many good targets and too few bombers and has set out relentlessly to see what can be done about if. Mis methods, however, have drawn criticism. Although admitting Beaverbrook “did wonders” and deserved the “thanks of the nation” for accelerating the production of fighter planes. the responsible weekly Economist attacked him as a “powerful obstructionist” in the sphere of production. “Beaverbrook’s tactics is that of| w

AIRCRAFT FLOW MAY INCREASE
fi Figures Show U. S. Fails
To Meet England’s Expectations Now.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (U. P.).— This country has failed to measure up to expectations in supplying Britain with airplanes—the implement of war they most need, a United Press survey showed today.
Defense officials conceded that this was correct but were confi-
~ |dent that the new year would find
the flow of aircraft markedly ine creased. Exact figures on aircraft being turned out for Britain in American faetories are not available but statistics prepared by the Commerce Department indicate that published estimates of from 300 to 400 airplanes a month .,are excessive. yThe Commerce Department's figures, which defense officials say are accurate, showed that in the year ended Oct. 31 only 1044 planes were exported to the United Kingdom. .Other “aid to Britain” steps: 1. Fifty over-age Navy destroyers were given to Britain in exchange for long-term leases for eight bases in British possessions and Canada. 2. Fifty Navy dive bombers ware declared obsolete and. sold to Bri-
3. About 800 World War Enfield rifles, artillery, mortars, munitions and other war materials were declared surplus after the Flanclers debacle and sold to the British. 4. The Sperry bombsight, considered highly accurate but not quite as good as the secret Norden sight, was released for British use. 5. The Government agreed to permit the British to acquire shipbuilding facilities here for the construction of freighters. 6. Sale of about 100 obsolete World war tanks for training purposes in Canada.
inspired brigandage,” said the Economist. “He plays his own hand waging war against other departments as well as against the Nazis. He lends himself to no co-opera-tion, let alone. co-ordination.”
