LIBRARY USED IN MANUAL STUDY

Pupils. Aid ‘Administration; Books on Government . Are Popular.

By EARL HOFF Manual Training High Schools library hag two bosses and only one job. : ’ :

high school officials. Second, it is a

branch of the public library system. Its job, of course, iJ tq serve Manual ‘Training pupils. The branch is not open to the general public. © All of the other high school libraries in the Cily are solely a part of the school, except at Crispus Attucks High School. There, the library serves the community and is situated in the school and patrons other than pupils enter through an outside door. The Manual Training library isis the largest in the school system, but there are a few things about it that are distinct. 2

- Librarians Are Teachers

One is the manner in which library instruction is integrated with other instruction. When the Business English Class or - English Composition VII comes to the point where pupils will have to study bibliographies or reference books, Mrs. Florence B. Schad,

sistants, Miss Margaret Paul and Miss Martha Vander Schoor, take over the class for several days. Last year they gave 116 instruc. tions. ~ Ten. pupil assistants aid the 1ibrarian, each serving one period each school day. They assist in keeping attendance records straight. Pupils may attend the library during study periods. In some schools it. takes half a period for the teachers in charge to check attendance. At Manual Training it takes about five minutes,

Checks on Chart

As each. pupil enters the library he gives the library assistant the number of his study hall seat. She marks this on a chart and sends it to the study hall teacher who in turn checks this against her records. And what kind of books are Manual Training pupils interested in today? Economics, various forms of government, history and other volumes that help them understand the things that are happening in the world, Mrs. Schad said. A surprisingly large number are interested in religious books, she said, Others want books that concern their hobbies, Still others head first for the fiction shelves. As to statistics, the library was started in 1895 and became a part of the City library -system in 1920. It has 7000 books, subscribes to 63 periodicals, has a clipping and pamphlet fille and 1600 mounted pictures. . Pupils took out books 31,000 times last year, or 15 times per child. ' The most avid readers at Manual Training are freshmen. By the

time pupils. become seniors their reading’ is a minimum.

Bernie and Chappell used to work together on the Columbia Broadcasting System, so when Chappell gave the sign-off last Tuesday night he said: “This is the Columbia Broadcasting System,” Almost immediately studio phones started to jangle with irate protests. Chappell was called to the phone. One of the NBC bosses squawked: “You know what you just did?” Chappell apologized. “Yes,” he said, “I just heard about it from Columbia. They’, re mad as the devil.” 8 o ” The Voice of Firestone celebrates its twelfth year on the NBC-Red network during the broadcast tonight, 7:30, WIRE. 2 # 2 Sound men on “Mr District Ate torney” are checking up on their train effects.
