FINISH 1S USED!”
Frame Colonial Bungalow Built for Kerchevals by J. J. Klee Co.
The frame Colonial-type bungalow at 3601 N. Denny St. was built) by J. J. Klee Co. for Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kercheval. Its features include the use of light walnut woodwork, modernistic indirect lighting, six closets, extra window. space, and the recently developed “brocade finish” paint. From the front hallway (which has a coat closet) you enter the living room with a large picture window. Too, there are small windows flanking the fireplace which has a brick facing, tile hearth and a walnut mantel.
Walls Sand Finish
Walls and ceilings throughout the house are sand finished. All ceilings are ivory. Both the hallway and living room walls are in a palmetto green with a trailing leaf pattern in the “brocade finish” paint. Mr. Kercheval is one of 17 Marion
| County interior decorators licensed
to use this new paint. It i$ applied like any other paint. Then after it has dried, a celophane stencil cut with the desired design (in this case the trailing leaf pat-
painter next takes as regular dry brush (Mr. Kercheval uses camel's hair) and brushes across the stencil. The brushing motion sets up an action within the paint itself so- that the pattern comes out in the ‘same ‘color but a darker hue. An archway leads to the dining room which also is in palmetto green in a waterlily pattern. Off the dining room is the kitchen which has built-in cabinets of natural white gum finish.
Air-Conditioned Furnace
Ceilings and walls are in winterberry, woodwork is off-white. Besides the window over the double sink are whatnot shelves and above the window is a built-in connection for an electric clock. Cabinet tops
harmonize with the French-blue floor linoleum which has a -geometric pattern. From the dining room, too, is a door to a hallway leading to Se
a| bath and two bedrooms. The south-
east bedroom walls are in four shades of blue, blending from a light blue at the ceiling to a dark blue at the floor level. The northeast bedroom has yellow walls. Both rooms have closets, two windows, and indirect lighting. The bath is in peach and black tile with silver-gray side .walls and ceiling. The wall and ceiling over the recessed tub are blue. The white built-in linen cabinet has glass doors. The full basement has an airconditioned furnace, shower room, fruit closet, automatic hot wate heater, and recreation room. two-car garage with overhead doors thas an 8x20 shop space. GARDENING—
The usual practice when' growing tender or tropical water lilies in a pool is to treat them as annuals and unless you wish to experiment with
| them, this is the easiest way.
However, if you wish to keep them over, here is the way to do it: When frost has killed the tops, the water in the pool should be drained to a level with the boxes or slightly lower. Next, cut back the foliage to about six inches from the soil, and move the containers into a cellar where the temperature is above 50 degrees. If the containers are too large to be handled easily, the plant may be spaded out of the box, roots and soil placed indoors. After the plants are removed to the basement, they should be permitted to stand until the soil is perfectly dry. The length of time depends upon the atmosphere of the basement, but it should not require more than two or three weeks. When the soil about the roots. has dried out, it will be noticed that tubers
Save Tender Water Plants By Storing in Dry Basement
are present linderneath the roots, about the size of a plum. These tubers must be removed carefully from the mother plant, because they form the undeveloped plants for the following season. They must be placed in pans or pots of slightly moist sand to remain until the eid of February or the first of March. The keeping of hardy varieties of water lilies through the winter pre< sents a different problem because they are more able to withstand cold weather, ; Drain the pool of water before severe freezing and remove the water lily leaves so that they do not harbor injurious aphids. If there are other water plants in the pool, cut them back also to prevent infestation. After the pool has been drained and the leaves removed from the plants without otherwise disturbing them, the pool may filled with leaves or litter to a dept of about six inches to protect the plants against excessive frost.
