If American industry is con“scripted, our defense program will be hamstrung and ultimate disaster will result, Paul G. Hoffman, president of the Studebaker Corp. de= €lared here last night. He addressed the executive leadership forum of the Indianapolis Junior Chamber of Commerce at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. He told the young businessmen that “it is our present task to fortify and strengthen our American system? “Unless hats done, there is some question in my\mind as to whether we will have apything left in this “country worth defending.”
Acclaims U. S. Policy So Far
He said he was glad to see that, ‘although Congress had enacted a statute enabling the Government to conscript industry, the Government “has not had recourse to that power.”. He added that the Administration’s “policy to date” in the defense program “is deserving of acclaim.” But Mr. Hoffman was critical of the possible conscription of industry. = “If our Government conscripts industry, and responsibility for its operation is divided between private management and government of--ficials, stagnation will be the inevitable result. For proof, I point to the railroads during the time they were under Government operation during the last World War. “Management can be conscripted put you can’t conscript brains or enthusiasm. Similarly, labor can be conscripted but you can’t conscript morale.” ; #Within Two Years”
Mr. Hoffman predicted that within two years the combined work of the defense commission and “private ‘industry” will prove whether con‘scription of industry is necessary. “I have a very positive belief in the capacity of private industry to build an impregnable defense for America. I have serious doubts about the ability of conscripted management and conscripted labor to do a similar job,” he declared. &

Consensus is that Tommy Harmon did all right in his big time debut as a radio announcer on Eddie Cantor’s program Wednesday night. Tommy had poise and displayed a good speaking voice. As a singer, though, he sort of fumbled a bit—but then Tom hasn't aspired for a spot among the crooners. He aims to be a sports announcer and with his reputation and knowledge of sports should be a natural.
