WING. COVERING IS VITAL STEP

. The covering of a model plane is one of the most important steps in its construction. and one. of the most difficult for the beginner. The covering job is very important to the model’s flight performce because the airfoil of the wing
st have a very definite shape or
it will not produce sufficient lift. Expert model builders have found that Japanese tissue paper (the standard covering for rubber-pow-ered models) preserves a wing's airfoil best if it is attached with the grain running from the leading to the trailing edge. Some wing frames have extra ribs or stringers placed along thesleading edge to keep the covering from sagging. On these the grain may run either way.
' Here’s How to Do It ‘Here's the way, to cover a wing:
First, lightly sandpaper the entire framework -to remove any drops of
{ glue. Then cut a piece of tissue two
inches wider than the wing and several inches longer than half of the span. Using clear dope, or thin cement if the dope isn’t thick enough to hold the paper in place, fasten the strip of tissue to the center rib. Be sure the glossy side of the paper is to the outside. Then with a brush or stick spread a light coating of paper cement along the spars and stringers and the second! rib from the center. With the wing-tip (on the side of the wing that: you are covering) braced against your chest, grasp the strip of tissue at a point where it is already attached to the wing between the thumb and forefinger of each hand and pull it gently toward you, at the same time allowing it to come in contact with the dope-cov-ered fyamework.
"Stick tothe Rule:
Follow this same method for covering the remainder of the wing, always working: from one rib to the next away from the center. Tail assemblies are. covered in the same way. Curved fuselages present a different problem. The smoothest jobs are made by cutting an individual piece of tissue for the curved section between each bulkhead. Flat sides can be covered with long strips as, the wing is. After the covering is all attached to the framework, if can-be sprayed lightly with water. To ‘ prevent
warping, however, the wing should |
be held either by pins or weights, in its regular position until the water has dried. This shrinks the paper and makes, it tight. When it is completely dry, a coat of clear dope may be applied to keep the paper taut and preserve it. ® 2 8 Every leader member and officer of the Academy of Model Aeronautics is asked to submit in writing to the Contest Board of the A. M. A. any proposals they, or the model builders in this vicinity, may have regarding 1941 regulations governing the flying of model aircraft and official contest procedure. The A.M. A. recommends that the local club meet to discuss existing regulations as well as future rules and make a report. which will represent a concensus of the members. In 500 official model aircraft competitions which have been held this year by the A. M. A. more than a quarter million model builders have
chalked up 2,500,000 flights with |"

HOLIDAY GOBBLERS DESTROYED IN BLAZE
VALPARAISO, Ind., Nov. 28 (U. P,) —The Lippman & Co. warehouse was destroyed by fire yesterday with an estimated loss of $30,000. Included in the damaged goods were several hundred turkeys, ducks, geese, chickens, eggs and hides, and 50 tons of rags and baled pgper. The blaze was believed caused by spontaneous combustion.
