Tom Harmon's dreams of performing on the air waves as brilliantly as he has on the gridiron may be realized tonight. \'The Michigan football star is to appear n Eddie Cantor's p S, 8 o'clock. WIRE, and accordin advance notices is to be heard in bi acting, singing. and announcing role. : This department has no inside information on Tom’s abilities as a singer or actor but he dabbled in radio now and then as an announcer and has made no secret of the fact that. he would like to make that his life’s work. This might be the big chance for the Hoosier youngster who has proved himself one of football’s all-time greats. Anyway, it’s pretty certain Tom's many friends will be listening in— and hopin, Dien Shore, vocalist of the Cantor show, is to sing “The Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, ” a re= cent importation from London which is beginning to outsell the y best sellers throughout the nation. ” ” ” The Indiana Central College Male Chorus, under direction of Eugene Mogle, starts a series o a broadcasts over WFBM this afternoon at 4:15 o'clock, They will be heard every other Wednesday for an indefinite period. The chorus, a selected group of 16, was organized about a year ago and’ ssince then has given many sacred programs in churches and secular programs for schools and on the I. C. campus. Members are James Vance of Logansport, Howard Nierstheimer of Muncie, Lucian Bare of Clay City, Wilbur Kenoyer of Hammond, Miram : Dewart of Syracuse, Craig Uncapher of Lafayette, Cloyd Rose of Olney, Ill, Adolph Walker of Mishawaka. Also Kenneth Spaulding of Columbus, Wallace Decker of Huntington, Garth Webber of Indianapolis, Derrill Ratliff of Hartford City, Richard Griffith of Durham, Cal., Charles McClung of Kirklin, Paul Tyron of Terre Haute, and Austin Pellett of Brook. The story of Martha Berry, who founded the Berry School in Georgia, will be dramatized on" tonight's Cavalcade program, 6:39 WLW. The radio production is entitled “Light on the Hills,” and reveals how Miss Berry started the school on property willed her Ly her father. Fred expects to get the latest lowdown on some fancy ballroom footwork. Tenor Kenny Baker, Portland Hoffa, the Martin @ Singers, the O Mighty Allen Art Players and Al Goodman's orchestra also willy contribute to the entertainment as usual, Miss Hopkins is a Hunter College girl. In the organization for which she drills and discourses on tango, rhumba, conga and the waltz, there are 110 girls and 90 men, who ‘average five or six lessons a day. The people who take lessons, Miss Hopkins says, usually are successful businessmen—men who were too busy carving careers in their youth, and now are catching up with relaxation. » »
The National Association of Broadcasters has published a cleverly illustrated pamphlet explaining its side of the controversy with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Excerpts: " “The issue, as we see it, is clear. It is music monopoly. Should any small group of men anywherc have the vested right to dictate what kind of music America is to hear on the air. “Broadcasting wants to give its radio listeners all of the best of all
represented by ASCAP. And broadcasting believes that song-writers should be paid when their music is used on the air. “But broadcasting believes that one of its duties is to keep radio’s opportunity an opportunity for all composers and authors. Thats includes members of ASCAP, to whom ASCAP’s management is not passing on the royalties radio has been paying. It includes also those thousands of composers and authors who have been barred from adequate hearing simply because they have not been elected to ASCAP’s private club. “Meanwhile, broadcasting is prepared this time for such an emergenmy. . . . “ ... A mutual undertaking "by 400 radio stations, Broadcast Music, Inc., will do the job ASCAP has consistently refused to do, namely, provide an open door to radio audiences for all composers and song-writers who can claim the right to.a hearing on the air.” : a The pamphlet says that) of ASCAP’s annual ingcome, one-third goes to the management, another third to the publishing corporations which are members and that of the balance one-fourth of its artists take 32 per cent while three- fourths of the artists get 1 per cent.
