~ WeDidn't Hold ~ Ball, So We Lost--Layden
Irish Had It Too Eas Early Games
By ELMER LAYDEN Notre Dame Football Coach When Notre Dame came Jif 1 behind to march 78 yards and| defeat Navy, 13-7, last week, after|
accounted for this sudden burst of power. |
My answer was, “If anyone could
account, | for| ev- |}
{i erything| in ootball, there| would not be any up-
my answer to last week’ aT with Iowa. The Hawkeyes hadn't been past | our 30-yard line all afternoon. ' | We had threatened several times. Just before | the break, we missed : a touchdown by Elmer Layden inches from the two -yard| line. Youel kicked to midfield, and we started another march which |carried to the 12, when a fumble gave Iowa the ball, Enich rturiing to midfield. We held for downs, and an intercepted pass gave the Hawkeyes possession again on our 23. | We held again, and a field goal missed. Then another fumble offered Iowa
new life again on our 24-yard line. |
This time Iowa put together fits best offensive of the day and scored with only five minutes left. Even on the second play after the ensuing kickoff, Towa intercepted and we never got the ball again.
Fumble Was the Jinx.
Someone told me after the game that Iowa was a jinx team. If the fact that we fumbled means the other team is a jinx, then everyone we play is a jinx. I can't remember the last game in whe we
didn’t fumble.
To win football games, you have to hold the ball and stop the gther team. We didn’t do it, and we|lost. "Iowa played tough, rugged ball— and there is no substitute for [ruggedness and toughness. Things ¢ame too easy to us early in the | season. When we got to the two-yard line, we didn’t know how to buckle down. this year, but a long run, an intercepted pass, a recovered fumble, on along pass always bobbed up to make our work too simple. Nothing like that happened against Iowa. Our long passes Brey
-missed. There were half 'a dozen
other “might have beens.” We|car-
_ ried the battle to Iowa and we| won
the statistics. The kids played good ball and it was a hard one to|lose. Jowa played a waiting game, played for the breaks—and got them in bunches when they counted. That is football.
Cornell Is Example |
If you don't believe it, ask [Cornell. The closest call the Big| Red had had up to last week| was a 21-to-7 victory over Ohig State. Then came the Dartmouth game. This brings us to the subject of like to express a few ideas. I|da not know the circumstances of the |Cor-nell-Dartmouth game and [da not know whether the officials [were right or wrong. The officials in our game last week made some mistakes, I believe, but when we cau not score from the two-yard |line, it wasn’t the fault of the officials. So disassociate these following remarks from last week's games. I have noticed, however, a strong tendency toward laxity on te part of the whistle-blowers. A move was started last year to relieve the arbiters of some of their responsibilities, such as keeping track ‘of| substitutions. As a result, it \seems they have relaxed and have become careless. I know of one official who hasn’t called anything in our games in two years—all he’s done is throw the ball back to the referee. In one game we were given la 19yard penalty for holding. The ball |G was on our 20, and the referee| went to the end zone and stepped out one step. A blocked punt there might have cost us the ball game) If the ball had been placed igi on
the. five-yard line, we might have survived a blocked punt or fumble.
Cites Another Case
On another and equally $hportant occasion, the field judge ru long pass complete. The fe or 50 yards away, overruled Fortunately, we were not st

A Kautsky Foe

vital touchdown. Officials have been out of position on out-of-bounds plays—runs, punts and passes—many times, but have been highly officious in talking about position. In one case, the linesman ruled a Notre Dame punt|™ out of bounds on the five-yard line. The referee place the ball on the one-yard line—so you see not all these decisions went against us. I repeat that this laxity, evidenced in many other games besides ours, and no factor in the outcome of our games, would indicate that the officials have welcomed the new leisure to the extent that they sit in their nice warm room between halves and absorb coffee and sandwiches, when they should be absorbing information from their rules books. My suggestion is spring practice for officials. These men are paid well enough for their three-hour stint on Saturday afternoon, and they are interested enough in their duties and in football, I believe, that if the suggestion were made by proper authorities, they would be glad to sharpen up by officiating at two, three, or half a dozen spring scrimmages. They can’t keep up with the game by appearing on the scene only for eight or 10 games a year.

| Central, Reitz Meet For Evansville Title
EVANSVILLE, Ind., Nov. 20.—For the first time since 1933 an Evansville public high school football team will win the local city championship, Central and Reitz meeting for the crown tomorrow. Memorial Catholic High's Tigers, city titleholders from 1934 through 1939, were battered from the civic ‘race Saturday by Bosse’s Bulldogs, who blotted out the Tigers, 22 to 0. Memorial had not lost a game to an Evansville team since Oct. 5, 1933, when Reitz, local champions
that year, drubbed the Tigers, 20
to 6. Central and Reitz also will be playing for the Southern Indiana Athletic conference championship.

Little World Series were won under Hendricks and Betzel. The present player working agreement between the Cincinnati Reds and Indianapolis will carry over next season, as announced previously, and the Indians will return to Bartow, Fla, for 1941 spring training. The Indians need plenty of reinforcements in the player ranks
‘land the Reds are expected to sup-
ply several candidates for the open
berths. President Miller's official state-
. | ment regarding the release of Ens
and the hiring of Killefer follows: “Circumstances unpredictable When the Cincinnati club graciously released
t| Jimmy Wilson, to accept the man-
agership of the Chicago Cubs, their act produced a like condition for us, for his leaving the Reds made a vacancy they desired to fill, by obtaining Jewel Ens’ services, and Ens being naturally receptive to their bid we, too, graciously consented to
ship contract with the Indians. Ens leaves with the best wishes of our entire organization. “After deliberate consideration we are announcing the selection of Wade Killefer to succeed Ens. Having served as manager of the Indians from 1933 through 1937, when he resigned to accept a managership closer to home in the Pacific Coast League, he is no stranger to our fans and our league is no stranger to him. “Killefer has a wide and varied successful career in baseball and knowing the position of esteem and regard he holds in baseball we are highly pleased in the reacquiring of his valuable services.”
