chestra. And he was part of two and a half hours of great music plus Disney color animation which, in the opinion of Messrs. Disney, Stokowski and some others, is going to blaze a new trail in our cultural history. But we shouldn't let our enthusiasm lead us to the conclusion that Mickey is the first member of the animal kingdom to scale such heights. A glance at tomorrow's opening program of the Indianapolis 'Symphbny Orchestra will recall another and earlier animal hero whose character combined the qualities of popular and esoteric delight. His name was Krazy Kat. And his name and fame are published in John Alden Carpenter’s music which Fabien Sevitzky will con= duct tomorrow and Saturday.

” ” ” . KRAZY KAT was the creation of cartoonist George Herriman. He didn’t have the advantage of animation, sound and color. But he had the intrinsic stuff which moved Mr. Carpenter to musical praise, and Gilbert Seldes to a lyrical chapter of adulation in his book, “The Seven Lively Arts. 2 What Mr. Carpenter thought of Krazy Kat when he wrote his music in 1921 is worth setting

down here: «To those who have not mastered Mr. Herriman’s psychology,” the composer wrote, “it may be explained that Krazy Kat is the world’s greatest optimist — Don Quixote and Parsifal rolled into one. It is therefore possible for him to maintain constantly at white heat a passionate relationship with Ignatz Mouse, in whick the gender of each remains ever a delightful mystery. “Ignatz, on the, other hand, condenses in his sexless self all the cardinal vices. If Krazy blows beautiful bubbles, Ignatz shatters them; if he builds castles in Spain, Ignatz is there with the brick. In short, he is meaner

By JAMES THRASHER THERE ISN'T MUCH doubt but that the esthetic man of the Mickey Mouse, to be precise. than anything. And his complex is cats.” ” ” ” PRESUMABLY KRAZY stirs Mr. Carpenter as deeply today as he did 20 years ago. At least the Chicago composer only recently revised the score completely. Mr. Sevitzky already had spoken for the new music, and it will be giv= en its first performance this week-end with the ink scarcely dry. : The version to be heard here is the third in which the music has been played. Its first performance was as an orchestral suite in Chicago on Dec. 23, 1921. The following month it was given in its complete ballet form at Town Hall, New York. In both these instances Mr. Carpenter had scored the music for small orchestra. At Mr, Sevitzky’s suggestion, it has been recast for the full symphonic forces plus, apparently, some changes in the music itself. If “Krazy Kat” seems to be emphasized at the expense of more serious things, let it be said that the program also will include Beethoven's “Eroica” Symphony, Ravel's Rhapsodie Espanole and three excerpts from Gounod’s “The Damnation of Faust.”

Manager Farrar Announces His Bookings.

With Loew’s returning to doublefeatures and popular prices today after two weeks of “The Great Dictator,” Manager Ward Farrar has settled back, taken stock of his preChristmas bookings, and passed the

word along, Following the coupling of “Kit Carson” and “Dr. Kildare Goes Home,” which begins tomorrow,

sweet,” with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, as the Thanksgiving attraction. There are 11 songs in the score, in case youre interested. “Escape Booked

Next in line is “Escape,” based on the Ethel Vance story of Nazi Germany, with Norma Shearer, Robert Taylor and Alla Nazimova featured. Other films on the schedule haven’t a definite date as yet, but theyll be at the Pennsylvania St. house in or around the holiday season. Among them are “Arizona,” the $2,000,000 Western “epic,” starring Jean Arthur and William Holden; George M. Cohan's musical comedy, “Little Nelly Kelly,” with Judy Garland; a Clark Gable-Hedy Lamarr starrer, “Comrade X”; “Duley,” with Ann Sothern, and “Gallant Sons,” which has Jackie Cooper and June Priesser.

Ford Film Coming

Also on the: future book is the John Ford production, “The Long Voyage Home.” This is one of the most widely and extravagantly praised pictures of the season. It is adapted from three one-act plays by Eugene O'Neill, and includes in its cast John Wayne, Ian Hunter, Thomas Mitchell and Barry Fitzgerald. Nor is that all. For Mr. Farrar also has booked the technicolor “Thief of Bagdad” and “Son of Monte Cristo,’ with Joan Bennett and Louis Hayward.

- TARZAN TALKS NOW

Johnny Weissmuller, who says he hasn’t spoken more than 100 words in all his Tarzan films, will engage in conversation in the next one.
