'FINAL TRIBUTE PAID
SENATOR PITTMAN
RENO, Nev. Nov. 14 (U. P.)—A Congressional delegation today ‘was to lead mourners in last respects to Senator Key Pittman, champion of silver and of defiance to totalitarian aggression, A special train from Washington carrying long-time friends and colleagues of the late chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will arrive shortly after noon for the funeral. j The body will lie in state at the civic auditorium until 3 p. m., when the service will begin. Governor E. P. Carville ordered all state offices clased from 1 to 4 p. m. and flags at half-staff on state buildings for 30 days. The 1200-seat capacity of the auditorium- was ‘not expected, by hundreds to accommodate the officials, mining men, and even “sourdoughs” of Alaskan gold days who knew Silver Key” Pittman, who raised the price of silver. The front seats will be given the 22 Senators, Congressmen and others arriving on the special train.
Question Now Before the Bar:
Where Did Fields’ $1300 Go
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 14 (U. P.).— A possible romance between W. C. Fields, bulbous-nosed screen comedian, and actress Carlotta Monti, his one-time secretary, was hinted before the Supreme Court this week, but the Justices seemed a bit perplexed when they were told Mr. Fields had. paid $6300 to Miss Monti for beating her up.
Miss Monti, however, received only $5000 and, ° puzzled over the mathematics of the deal, went to the State Bar, Mr Fields which recommended disbarment of her attorney, Clifford A. Rohe, for allegedly holding out on his client. Attorney Isaac Pacht, former Superior Judge, tipped the hand when the disbarment proceedings began before the Supreme Court. He also provided a few answers to questions police failed to get several years
ago when they investigated a disturbance at Mr. Fields’ home. It appeared that Miss Monti came home late one night, and, having forgotten her key, awakened the butler. The butler didn’t like to have his sleep disturbed and an ar-
i |gument followed. Mr. Fields called % [the police,
“I want peace and rest at night and arguments during the day,” he said. “If I could sleep through the day, I wouldn't mind arguments during the night.”
Attorney Pacht had a different version. “Fields and his sweetheart, Miss
|Monti, had been out on a ‘brawl’” = (he explained to the bench. * |their way home Fields beat her up.
“On
At least that’s what she said.” Miss Monti retained Mr. Hohe as her counsel and demanded damages. Mr. Fields said he would pay $5000 and no more. So Mr. Rohe settled for five
grand on behalf of Miss Monti. Lat-.
er, when she and Mr. Fields patched their tiff, she was pained to learn he had paid $6300 balm to Mr. Rohe, who had held out on her.
