Corp Area Headquarters has
a library of about 80 sound films showing various field oper-
ations, and the Signal Corps, which produces the films, 1s knee deep in a program to turn out more films as rapidly
as possible. .The use of films to teach military subjects, started in 1930, has had marked success. With them it is possible to show terrain, organization’ and equipment ich it probly ‘would be impossible to duplicate near any particular y camp.
Speed Up Teaching
The flims have s ed up the teaching of technijcal s foie a picture doing more to lens actual field situations than any words or diagrams. An instructor might talk for hours without bringing home to his class how and where to dig a4 fox hole for protection during an engagement, how to place a machine gun when being attacked by strafing planes, how chemical warfare [troops work,| or the use of signal equipment. But films can do the job. In some cases the films can show * things that can not be seen in real life. For instance, | the recoil mechanism of big guns operates so rapidly that it is impossible to follow it with the eye. But slow motion movies can enable every stage of the recoil to be studied. {The Signal Corps has production , units at Wright Field, Dayton, and ‘Fort Monmouth, N. J., and a photographic laboratory at| Fort Humphreys, Washington. The whole film upit carries about 75 men and officers. The Wright Field unit has two officers and 12 men,

[HOMBS DAMAGE AGED CHURCHES
Spire Hit; Nell Gwynn’s Grave Disturbed.
LONDON, Nov. 14 (U. P.)—German bombs are piling up a mounting toll of irreplacable damage to Britain’s ancient churches and buildings, it was revealed today when the Government announced that.the cathedrals in Birmingham, Coventry and London had been struck. Also damaged was the Royal College of Surgeons, one of the world’s leading medical schools built in London 95 years ago. It was not revealed whether the college’s medical and anthropological data and exhibits were damaged. A bomb struck in the churchyard of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Cathedral; disturbing the graves of Lord Halifax, famous general of the 1600s; Thomas Chippendale, 18th century furniture maker, and Nell Gwyn, English actress and mistress of Charles II. The explosion decapitated a figure of Christ and narrowly missed 600 persons singing “Annie Laurie” in the church crypt.
1398 Buildings Hit
It also was revealed that St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry had been damaged in an air raid, although there was no indication that its towering spire, one of the most famous in the nation, had been struck. The cathedral was built in 1398 and is one of the best examples’ of Gothic architecture. Its spire is 294 feet high. Birmingham's St. Martin's Cathedral, built in the 13th century, has been damaged. It was reconstructed in 1873 and contained fine examples of modern glass work. The Oxford, Regent and Bond
‘| Street shopping districts of London
have suffered heavy damage. Twothirds of the windows of some of the world’s leading clothiers are shattered.
Peepholes for Customers
Most of the windows have been covered with beaverboard containing small windows and peepholes for

displays. Few stores have been closed permanently by the bombings. Casualties of the air raids include
the John Lewis Department Store; Peter Robinson Department Store; Swan and Edgar; Austin Reed, and the Selfridge Department Store.
