Church of St. Clement Danes * Of Nursery Rhyme Fame Also Struck.

LONDON, Nov. 8 (U, P.)—~The Tower of London, historically the

“most interesting spot in England, ‘and the Church of St. Clement :Danes in the Strand, of nursery irhyme fame, have ‘been damaged in recent German air raids, it was disclosed today. .. Reports that Westminster Abbey *had been destroyed were denied. ~Only- superficial damage las been suffered by the choir at the Abbey. . Some damage was inflicted on the tower spire of St. Clement Danes, «Which. houses the bells of the nursery rhyme, “Oranges and Lemons, ‘Say the Bells of St. Clements.” : Also, two bombs crashed within ia few feet of the church on the side *nearest the law courts. Stained ‘glass windows were shattered, iron ‘railings were torn down and the ‘walls were pock-marked by large ‘bomb fragments. ' Tower Turret Hit . ‘St. Clement Danes Church was fcompleted in 1682 from designs by sir Christopher Wren. The turret and one wall of the ower of London were hit. Bombs “tore down walls eight feet thick enclosing the warden’s quarters. A {section of the wall as large as a 10ton truck fell into the moat. & The tower is on the bank of the Thames adjoining the boundary of ®he city. Once a- citadel, never seriously assaulted, it also has served as a royal palace, a state prison and @ mint, It is regarded historically as the most interesting spot in Engand, ! Surrounded by Double Wall de The tower comprises an irregular mass of buildings erected at various periods and surrounded by a double line of wall, strengthened with towersy and by a deep moat. In the center rises ‘the Square Norman or White Tower. Tradition ascribes ‘the building of the tower to Julius Caesar. Although. Roman remains have been found ‘the edifice actually dates to William the Conqueror who, in 1078, erected the White Tower to overawe the citizens of London. In the tower “Good Queen Bess” lived in a palace long since torn down, and here the most famous prisoners of Britain's history had been held—kings, queens, princes and princesses, noblemen without number, bishops, authors and famous traitors. Prisoners in the tower have included David Bruce, King of ScotJand; King John, Prince James of Scotland, Queen Anne Boleyn, Queen Catherine Howard, Chaucer, 17-year-old Lady Jane Grey, Guy Fawkes and his conspirators, William Penn, Samuel Pepys, Sir Walter Raleigh and many others, Most of them were beheaded.

Nazis May Use

‘Water Gasoline’

By Science Service WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.—Revelation of a means by which gaso- . line is possibly being obtained in Germany for the airplanes that make nightly raids on England is contained in a patent just issued here by: the: U. S. Patent Office. Its number is 2,220,357, and it was issued to Michael Steinschlager of Moers, Niederrhein, Germany, who: has assigned his American rights to the Koppers Co., Pittsburgh. - Water-gas, - used for fuel and illuminating purposes, is obtained by passing steam over glowing coal. Chemical processes have been used in the past, by which such gases have been chemically changed into liquid hydrocarbons, of which gasoline is an example, Herr Steinschlager claims that his method increases production of the.liquid materials from a given amount of the original gas by 60 per cent, but the fuel consumption is increased only 10-15 per cent. Iie accomplishes this by storing some of the ordinarily wasted heat, and retreating some of the waste gases that have gone - through the first stage of the’ process.

MODERN P SYSTEM URGED

Program Is Antiquated Indiana, Expert Tells Social Workers.

By JOE COLLIER Indiana needs a modern system of institutional treatment for the young criminal, Frank T. Mr, Flynn was one of several nationally known speakers to address the conference, which will continue

Mr. Flynn charged that the state reformatory “is no more a reforma- | tory than is any other prison in the United States.” “Perhaps this is a harsh statement, but it is the truth,” he said. “Indiana has no reformatory in any common sense version of the term. A Youth Correction Authority with sentencing powers absolutely would be ineffective if required to commit young offenders to such an institution .as Indiana now contends is a ‘reformatory.’ “Nearly 70 per cent of the inmates of the Reformatory are two, three or four-time offenders. The population is double the ideal number for effective treatment purposes; the guards are politically se-

Sees Antiquated Methods “The physical facilities of Indi-

are good, but the entire program of treatment is based upon an antiquated theory—that custody and punishment seem to be the only reasons for its existence. “The condition is not necessarily the fault of the institutions’ staffs. No superintendent can do an effective job of treatment with personnel politically selected and without .even a minimum of train-

lected and untrained and there is|j§}{ -

MUNISING., Mich., Nov. 8 (U. PD. —A survey of. damages suffered by the steamer Sparta was planned today before attempts to take the ves sel from a Lake Superior rock shelf on which she was grounded. Four coast guard cutters were dispatched to the scene 14 miles east of here to assist in refloating the 385-foot freighter which went. aground during a gale and snowstorm Tuesday night while trying to reach the shelter of Munising Bay. Because of high waves, 31 crew members were forced to wait until yesterday to reach shore in a rowboat and report the ship’s plight.

Mr. Flanner, who has made a study of work relief projects, urged that “we agree to combat the tendency to replace normal employment with work relief.” He pointed out that there is a marked tendency on the part ou 0 supplant regular employees with relief labor and said that his studies have found that this is inefficient and wasteful.
