Tips on Purchasing Engagement Rings

.. THIS ISN'T A BRIDE'S LESSON about round steak and lamb pie! : It concerns a purchase that comes long before housekeeping. it’s the first thing a girl and her future husband buy together. Of course you've guessed! It's the engagement ring. And here's what you want to know when you and the young man go diamond shopping. : Whether you plan to spend $50 or $5000 -for an engagement ring, Pick out your jeweler before you pick the ring. No one can become & diamond {expert just looking in the display windows and strolling into the stores. Choose a good jeweler first. Then let him help you with : Here are a few quality points explained for you. They're easy to rememper by four key words that begin with the letter C”"—CARAT, COLOR, CUT, and CLARITY. This is what they mean in relation 10 your new diamond ring: :

your investment,

Carat: All gem stones are weighed by the carat—a word that comes from the seed of the Far Eastern carob tree. Actually, one carat

weighs two-tenths of a gram. It iS|cutting the larger stones.

sunaivided further into 100 points, so that if a diamond weighs slightly more-‘than a half carat the jeweler may speak of it as a 50:point stone. The larger a diamond, the greater its proportionate cost. | That is, a perfect two-carat stone| will usually cost more than twice as much as a perfect one-carat stone.| This is because the larger gems are more rare. It’s smart to remember, therefore, that there’s more value to you in - buying one sizeable solitaire than an equal weight of smaller stones.

The second key-word, color, re-

fers to that clear, bright, frosty white which is the world standard for a diamond. Perfect white diamonds are without any color at all, Just like a drop of pure water. It's the facets (fass-etts) or little planes cut into the gem that catch the light and give the diamond its brilliant, multi-colored reflection. There are actual colored dia.monds, of course. The famous Hope is as blue as a sapphire, and the great Tiffany diamond that was shown at the World's Fair in New York is | a. sunshiny yellow. But most colors, especially the so-called perfect blue-white, are exceedingly rare. What you want is a stone that’s clear and steely white in a good north light. ; .

Cut ,Is Important ~

The most usual cut of the solitaire is a round stone with 58 little facets or sides to catch the light.

This is the most brilliant of all cuts}

and is, therefore, called the “brilliant.”’ A plainer cut, in today’s streamlined style, is square or ob--long in outline with the four corners nipped off. Another modern shape is the square-cut. And then there's the marquise+—a graceful oval with pointed ends that make the hand look slim and long. In recent years there's been a vogue for surrounding the central -stone with many small brilliants or straight little baguettes for ornamentation. These small diamonds, however, were cut in Europe, and to-

In fact,

day we're going back to the solitaire. American cutters are the finest in the world when it comes to

Hardly any diamonds are absolutely flawless. But then, neither are any husbands! A visible flaw, | however, such as a carbon spot or |other imperfection, will materially [lower the value of your diamond. | The fewer or smaller the -imperfec- | tions, as seen through the little {black eye-loupe which the jeweler (will let you fit into your own eye for a good look, the more valuable {the stone. If the flaws are too in- | finitesimal to detract from the full | beauty of the cut gem, the diamond is quite satisfactory. Evén so, the reliable jeweler will not’ it “perfect” since obviously, ot. Menfolk talk a lof about longtime investments. Well, the engagement ring is just that: It’s bought, not for years, but for generations. It'll be treasured, re-set and re-worn by your children’s children.

Today's Recipe SALMON STUFFED POTATOES

Jet Used on Sweater |

THERE'S INFINITE VARIETY in sweaters for every occasion, for every hour this season. Right now as the formal season is beginning the most exciting sweaters are for evening wear. Jet, the darling of

ers. Whole yokes of jet sequins highlight black woolknit jerkins or short sleeved sweaters. Jet appears as a border for bottom. and neck of a sleeveless jerkin of wool chenille —smart with a long skirt and balloon sleeved blouse of chiffon.

Gold beads and metallic thread trace intricate patterns of embroideries on “long torso” fitted sweaters. Rhinestones gieam in .clusters in an all-over pattern — the only trimming on an azure blue sweater. Pinks, blues, white, red and black are the loveliest and most important colors for these evening sweaters. Classics go on for college and country wear—with violet ‘tones, gold, clear light blues, and orange-red leading the field in colors.

French: and English women have long loved the dressmaker type sweater to wear as a suit blouse. Charming softer sweaters are now appearing for American women to wear with their town suits. Smocking, drawn work, draw-string necks with little bows and buttons, high square and scalloped necklines are some of the details which distinguish this group of suit sweaters. They are knitted on fine-gauge machines of finer softer yarns—angora, chiffon Shetland, Cashmere and blends of these lovely yarns.

Decoration Tip

IF THERE are side lights in the room that interfere with your decoration scheme, the fixtures can be
