He was “recruited” at March Field, as a part of the Army’s drive to enlist pilots. ; : actress-wife. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
On screen or off, John Barrymore seems to have wife trouble. Here he is in “The Great Profile,” at the Lyric tomorrow, registering pained protest as Mary Beth Hughes, his screen spouse, gives him a piece of her mind. Below are Russ Morgan and his featured singer,
Carol Kay, who will beguile local
vaudeville fans on the Lyric stage.
Summerville Works Twice Yearly, Prefers Fishing
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 7 (U. P).— Slim Summerville, who works only twice a year, is busy these days making his “winter money,” and when he’s earned enough for his rent, groceries and some fishing tackle, he'll leave Hollywood and go home to Laguna Beach. That will be the last the movie town will see of him until next spring when he will be back for his “summer money.” | “Most of us comedians are such serious people that we work ourselves into the grave,” he said. “I decided last winter, while I was fishing off Laguna, that.I was a fool to work all the time.
A Fateful Decision
“So I said to myself, ‘Slim, you work when you need the money and fish the rest of the time’ That was a fateful decision to make, I know, because no school teacHer will ever point me out to her pupils as an example of industry and thrift, “Why, most of Laguna is downright ashamed of me. The bankers think I'm shiftless and the civic clubs never ask me to make speeches any more. They say under their breath, ‘There goes that lazy, good-for-nothing Summerville.’ ” Slim at present is getting hls “winter money” by working as a cook in Zane Grey's “Western Union.”

“I can’t even fry eggs,” he said, “but that doesn’t make any difference. I sang in 12 films once without knowing one note from another. The critics said I sounded awful but the producers kept signing me, so, I guess I wasn’t so bad.” Directors Surprised
The casting directors were surprised when Summerville took the comedy role in “Western Union.” A few months earlier they had offered him a part in “Brigham Young, Frontiersman,” but he was “too busy.” He had already earned his summer money in a Maisie picture. Slim started out as a Keystone Kop 27 years ago. Fatty .Arbuckle directed him. He spent years being the recipient of pies, falling off police wagons and being chewed by bulldogs. “I've been under contract at one time or another to almost every studio in Hollywood,” he says, “but I guess I won't sign any more contracts, that is, unless the studio will give me June, July and August, and November, December, January and February off each year.”
THIS MIXUP WAS SURE TO HAPPEN
It was, of course, inevitable that someone would mix up the names of Robert Preston and Preston Foster in the cast of “North West Mounted. Police.” Classic examples to date are in two foreign papers. A South American correspondent refers to “Robert Preston Foster,” while a more succinct Englishman writes that “North West Mounted Police” stars ‘Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Paulette Goddard and Robert P. Foster.”
OLIVIER ENJOYS '‘SOFT' FILM JOB
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 7 (U. P.).— Laurence Olivier believes he has the easiest movie job in Hollywood. All he does is lie abed eight hours a day ‘while his actress wife, Vivien Leigh, pretends to be his nurse. They are making the movie -version of the lives of Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton, and the script calls for Nelson to suffer a nervous
1| breakdown.
