The Airport Gets a Mascot

Brownie . . . he greets

Ignores Whirling Props; 'Hasn’t Missed ‘Food | Ship’ Yet.

About two months ago Brownie showed up at the Municipal Airport and the place hasn’t been the same since. Brownie is a dog, but for the first couple of weeks everyone at the Airport believed that at any moment of the night or.day Brownie was just going to be a beautiful memory. This apprehension was brought about by Brownie’s casual treatment of whirring propellors and landing planes. There isn’t anything big enough to get sassy with a whirring propellor, but this is a fact of life that Brownie apparently had overlooked. | Almost upon his arrival, which was | so informal no one can say exactly when it happened, Brownie began the disconcerting habit of © running out to meet all the incoming ships. { Great Consternation

Airplanes and dogs/ don’t mix, and there was great consternation when this first occurred. Everyone yelled: “Keep that dog off the field.” But next time a plane came down, Brownie would be out wagging his tail and just managing to keep out of the way. On the theory that you can’t go on forever waiting for that second

shoe to drop, airport attaches de(cided to relax about Brownie. Now his excursions out to meet planes and welcome the avellers are taken with great ca by all but visitors. ; As a matter of fact, they have ‘come to the conclusion that Brownie is in even more danger at the Administration Building than on a plane-strewn field. This is because of his habit of lying down directly in the door step that leads from the building to the field. They figure he might get stepped on by some one who didn’t see him. *

Likes Shade of Wing

In the summer time, Brownie likes to lie in the shade of a plane wing. He has become so used to the roar of motors that when the particular plane he’s shading under takes off, he doesn’t so much as give any indication that he has noticed. He won’t even move until several minutes after the plane has gone and the sun makes him uncomfortable again. He's smart, too. Only at certain times of the day and only on cer-

boxes removed from planes at the local port. They usually contain scraps of meat and food that are just what a dog likes best. Brownie may pass up all the other big liners all day long, but he hasn’t missed one of those yet. Everyone likes him and he is regarded as the port mascot. It is

just coincidental that he is part airedale. :

SLIPPERY BANDIT

Maybe I+ Was Because He Was Locked in

the Grease Room—and Speaking of Greece—

|

| — By FRANK WIDNER FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, seven or eight towns qf

northern Indiana have been visited

by a youthful gunman known oniy

as the “sun-glass” bandit because of the dark glasses he wears. ; The other night in Hammond, Ralph Riddle, filling station attend-

ant there, thought he finally had tacular series of holdups. When station and commanded him to “act natural, this is a stickup,” the attendant overpowered him. He locked the |bandit in gy . grease room and went to call police. But when they arrived, their holdup man once again had evaded the law. Mr. Riddle had |forgotten. all about an open window in the grease room. I 8 =» in 2 WHEN L. A. |GEUPEL of Evansville read of the Italian bombings aimed at the water works in Athens, Greece, he® was

plenty mad. Mr. Geupel, who happens to be waterworks: superintendent in + Evansville, had a personal interest - at ‘heart. He helped build those Grecian supply dams. From 1927 to 1932 he was on the job there as engineer for the Ulen Co. of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

® #2 |= Jack Moon, proprietor of a cafe in Bedford, has found an honest man. A letter the other day from a Paoli resident informed Mr. Moon that the man had visited the restaurant the previous night and had walked away without paying his bill. ™ Enclosed in the (letter was 40 cents. . ” " 2 A SMALL, STRAY DOG caused two cars to pile up on U. S. 31 near Franklin the other day just because it walked across the road. Kenneth Lee “Browning, a grocery clerk, saw the animal and applied his brakes. | His car skidded on the wet pavement .and crashed into a pole. Following the Browning car was Floyd Walker and several companions in another machine. He too was unable to stop and overturned in a ditch, No one was hurt and the dog disappeared. |
