Gardening—

If you must burn your leaves— be cautious. The common practice is to burn tree leaves which are diseased or have been damaged by insects. However, it is unwise to start a fire under trees because the heat scorches the bark, the function of which is to protect the cambium layer, the life of the tree. Thin-barked young trees are easily scorched even by slight heat, injuring or killing the cambium layer. This produces conditions favorable to invasion by borers. Hot air rises and while your fire may not be close to the trunk, much damage can result to overhead branches, especially when there is no breeze to divert the heat. Then, too, the bed of hot ashes is bound to damage the roots. So choose a spot away from all trees and shrubs for your fire, keeping it small at all times. = ” ”

Your vegetable garden needs: attention before forgetting it for the winter. Old rhubarb plants will relish a heavy mulch of manure. New plants can be set out at this time. Parsley and chive plants can be dug

lup and potted for winter garnish.

Feep them in a sunny window and be sure they are well watered.

Burning of Leaves Under Trees Dangerous Practice

The husks of ornamental corn shoud be stripped back and braided while they are soft. A few ears of this colorful vegetable are most attractive when hung at the entrance of your home.

Cabbages are better stored out of doors. Place them head down in a trench and cover first with a heavy layer of leaves and then with earth. Add more earth as the temperature drops Boots, turnips and carrots can be stored in a cool basement or where the temperature can be kept down to about 40 degrees. Place them in boxes of sand. Much vegetable garden refuse can be used in the compost pile. Do not use corn stalks as they are too woody for this purpose. Burning the stalks helps to suppress corn-borers and ear-worms. Remains of squash and other vines as well as bean bushes are suitable. Dig up or plow your vegetable garden while the weather still is good. This not only improves the soil but turns up many insects which will succumb to the first frosts. Fill a few boxes with a rich garden soil mixed with sand ‘and humus and store under cover for use next spring when planting seeds in flats.

‘UPSIDE-DOWN’ TREE PRUNING PERFECTED

By Science Service - MADISON, Wis, Nov. 1— Pruning young pines and other evergreen trees by a new “upsidedown” method originated in Russia is expected to produce logs 20 or more feet in length yielding boards without knots. In the conventional pruning method, young trees are permitted to reach a certain height with relatively little attention. Then bottom branches are cut off, leaving a bunchy little top to develop to full size as the tree grows. This, however, leaves the bases of the young branches imbedded in the heart of the tree, to become knots when the trunk is finally sawed into boards. In the Russian method, the young {ree is permitted to develop a bushy growth near the ground, until it 1s about eight years old. After this, its-.central growth axis, or leader, is prevented from producing any more branches above this ground-hugging bush, simply by pinching off all Side uidis. The leader thus grows into a-long, slender, pole-like sprout, deriving its nourishment from the bushy branches. near the ground. Oniy after it has reached a height that will yield a log 18 to 20 feet long is it permitted to branch out and form a normal top.

STAIRS AND STEPS ARE DANGER SPOTS

y Thirty-four per cent of all fatal accidents in 1939 occurred where you think you are the safest—at home, Home accidents, which took 32 ,000 lives last year, mostly are preventable, Safety Council. Stairs and steps are the most dangerous spots, accounting for 22 per cent otf all home accidents. About 19 per cent occurs in the yard and 18 per cent in the kitchen. The living room, porch, bedroom and basement are next in order, the Council said. Broken steps leading to basements or porches should be fixed. Handrails should run the length of the stairways and if the bottom step cannot easily be seen it can be painted white. Adequate lighting is necessary rear dark stairways and exterior aoorways. Frayed electric wires and loose electric connections should be mended and sufficient electric outlets built to prevent “overloading” a circuit. . Garden and. automobile tools should be kept in racks instead of lving loose and outdoor radio antennas should be protected with lightning arrestors.

The number will easily exceed the 1929 figure, as well as#&il years since, he said.
